Don’t fall for Cabrera’s hot start in fantasy

Oswaldo Cabrera is on fire to start the season for the New York Yankees, but a deeper look shows that fantasy baseball managers probably shouldn’t fall for the early hype.

Tanner Tully

NYY Relief Pitcher #84

Yankees sent LHP Tanner Tully outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Tully went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 29-year-old lefty didn’t make an appearance for New York during a brief stint in the majors. He’ll presumably stick around as extra organizational pitching depth for the Yankees.
Aaron Judge

NYY Center Fielder #99

Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI on Wednesday, leading the Yankees to a 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks in an 11-inning marathon.

Judge snapped a six-game homerless drought to open the season by taking Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly deep for a 396-foot blast to right-center field. He also extended New York’s lead in the 11th inning with an RBI double off reliever Scott McGough. It was only a matter of time before the 31-year-old fantasy superstar heated up.
Caleb Ferguson

NYY Relief Pitcher #64

Caleb Ferguson recorded a two-out save on Wednesday in the Yankees’ extra-inning victory over the Diamondbacks.

Arizona ran out of position players after giving up the designated hitter in an 11-inning marathon, which ended with Ferguson striking out opposing pitcher Scott McGough with the bases loaded. Seriously. We can’t make this stuff up.
Clay Holmes

NYY Relief Pitcher #35

Clay Holmes allowed two runs in the 10th inning on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks and was saddled with his first blown save of the season.

Holmes was tasked with protecting a two-run advantage in the 10th inning and was unable to preserve the lead as Corbin Carroll delivered a game-tying infield single with two outs in the frame. It was his first blown save in four opportunities this season. He wound up recording one out in the ensuing frame after the Yankees re-took the lead and was credited with a win in relief.
Carlos Rodon

NYY Starting Pitcher #55

Carlos Rodón gave up two runs over 5 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.

Velocity wasn’t an issue for Rodón in his second outing of the season as he averaged 95.3 mph on his four-seam fastball. The bad news is that he generated just seven swinging strikes, including only three on 59 fastballs, to finish with a lackluster 23 percent CSW. He gave up seven hits, including a pair of homers, and recorded only three strikeouts. He’s in line for an extremely favorable matchup on Tuesday against the floundering Marlins his next time out.
Nestor Cortes

NYY Starting Pitcher #65

Nestor Cortes allowed three runs in five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

It could have been worse, given that Cortes allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out two. He induced only three missed swings all night. It’s still rather likely that there will be mixed-league value here at some point, but he doesn’t seem like a great play at the moment. On the plus side, he does get the Marlins next time out.
Giancarlo Stanton

NYY Right Fielder #27

Giancarlo Stanton struck out all three times he was up Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Stanton had an encouraging spring, but he’s opened the regular season 3-for-20 with 11 strikeouts and just one hard-hit ball, somehow. Even when he’s at his worst, Stanton hits the ball hard about half of the time. This year, though, he’s 1-for-9 there with five grounders.
Phil Bickford

NYY Relief Pitcher #50

Yankees signed RHP Phil Bickford to a minor league contract.

Bickford joins the Yankees organization after he was released by the Mets after spring training. The 28-year-old posted a 5.79 ERA, 1.07 WHIP with a 7/0 K/BB ratio across 4 2/3 innings in spring camp.
Oswald Peraza

NYY Shortstop #91

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reports that Oswald Peraza (shoulder) will start to throw on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list on Opening Day after dealing with shoulder pain during spring training. Boone added that Peraza “should start to build pretty quick from there”, so it sounds like we could see the young infielder in the next week or so. However, Oswaldo Cabrera has filled in nicely for Peraza at shortstop hitting 8-for-20 (.400 AVG) with two home runs and seven RBI in the Yankees’ first five games of the season, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees decide to do when Peraza makes his return.
Anthony Volpe

NYY Shortstop #11

Anthony Volpe finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in the Yankees’ 5-2 defeat of the Diamondbacks on Monday.

There’s a pretty concentrated effort to keep Volpe from swinging for the fences this year, and it’s worked out really well so far, as he’s gone 8-for-14 with a significantly reduced launch angle. Statcast thinks he’s been lucky, but we’ll see how that works out in the long run. If he can convince the Yankees to bat him leadoff regularly, he could be a true impact player in fantasy leagues.
