Top 10: the fastest diesel locomotives

While the majority of high-speed railway networks now use electric traction, diesels provided a useful technological stepping-stone from steam power and the cleaner, faster and greener future, although diesel locomotives and multiple-units still ply their trade on secondary routes. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the only American entry on the list, but the Pioneer Zephyr was the first streamlined diesel train and the first multi-coach passenger train to exceed 180 km/h. On May 26 1934 it hit a maximum speed of 112mph as part of a dawn-to-dusk run between Denver and Chicago, which went onto inspire the film The Silver Streak and in turn, the train’s nickname.

The best cars from the ‘90s

With a loping ride and a huge cargo area, the Berlingo Multispace is the kind of car that should have enjoyed far greater success. This is the car that not only demonstrated how a mere supermini could be profoundly desirable but kick-started Ford’s comeback with its ‘New Edge’ design language. Regular models got a 68bhp Duratec engine, though the SportKa bumped that up to 94bhp and boasted the gearbox and suspension from the Puma.

The kindest way to present the running of IndyCar's first hybrid oval race is to say the series left Iowa Speedway with a lot of lessons and a lot to improve in the days and weeks ahead. Separate from the issues that led to a dire lack of passing, ...

    This RWD Ford Focus With a 725-HP V8 Is a Wild Alternate-Reality Focus RS—And It’s For Sale

The long, at times fraught history of the Ford Focus occasionally produced some spectacular oddities. From the original RS we never got in the States, to the dreary “second-gen” we unfortunately only got, the Focus represented the potential of what the Blue Oval could achieve when it threw its global weight behind a small car—even if that potential was rarely realized. On this side of the pond, it did result in a few stunning one-offs for shows like SEMA, and wouldn’t you know such a creation is for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
