For the past month or so, we've been working with a small number of alpha testers to get some initial feedback and to fine-tune some of the new features. We are now ready for more feedback, so today, we take the next step in testing! We've opened up a new Invision Community 5 preview site for everyone to use, find bugs and offer feedback. The new preview site has a feedback area and a bug report area, so please use those areas on the preview site, rather than post your thoughts here. 👉 https://preview.invisionalpha5.com/ There are two themes currently available. The first is the more 'classic' look that you will find instantly familiar. The second theme has the newer views enabled, such as the sidebar and feed mode for forums. You are welcome to switch between the two, and you can also change the layout options via your account settings. All this information is contained in the welcome topic over there. Have fun, and please let us know what you think!24 points

We're up to Alpha 4 over in the secret alpha testing club and things are progressing nicely. There's been a lot of improvements to the theme editor, and the text editor. We've made some improvements based on feedback to several areas including advertisements as well as fixed a ridiculous number of bugs. I think the alpha testers will agree that it's pretty stable now and closer to beta than a raw alpha. We'll be launching Alpha 5 tomorrow and this will be upgradable via the AdminCP. Internally, we're going to test a clone of this site and upgrade that to see how that goes. In the mean time, is there anyone else here that wants to join the alpha team? We're ready for more people if you are. Just let me know! If you're just curious, you can follow the releases and fixes here.11 points

So broadly speaking, a beta will be a true beta whereas in the past with new major versions, it's more alpha-like in that we might add some more functionality, or refactor bits of code on whim which means you get a really lengthy beta testing phase. With v5, we're being more careful to ensure the quality of the product, and even now it's incredibly stable and very polished and much more beta-like than alpha. That said, we are aware that we may need to revisit some features and tweak them, or potentially re-work bits of code so we're not quite ready for beta status. We're really hoping for a public beta by September. We're aware that we're running out of year and before long Thanksgiving arrives and signals the start of the holiday season. We haven't made any firm decisions about release schedules in terms of which Invision Community packages get beta first. My instinct right now is to release both the classic version and the Invision Community but we'll confirm closer to the time. We may stagger the final release, but that would be just to prevent support becoming overwhelmed with upgrades. But more pressingly, the next steps are: - [Coming next week] Public alpha: an install of Invision Community v5 for everyone to test, offer feedback and post bugs on. - Developer alpha: we've gathered a very small group of contributors to test and give feedback on the development tools - Finalise v4 to v5 upgrade tests - Public beta9 points

There has been no significant changes to the follow system in v5. In terms of ETA, there can be no precise time until we know it's finished. v5 itself is pretty straight forward, but to launch it, we will need updates to our website, documentation, etc which all take time. Progress is good though, we're up to alpha 7 and hundreds of fixes have already gone in, lots of features changed based on feedback and even a few things added we've yet to blog about. We're ready for the next step in alpha testing, and we expect to have more news on that next week.8 points

Invision Community v5: An update, and next steps
David N. and 4 others reacted to Randy Calvert for a topic
Commerce has not been removed. It will continue to be available and they're adding more support for digital transactions (like better ad support, more subscriptions options, selling different digital offerings on your site, etc). The only thing removed from Commerce is the ability to ship physical products. The marketplace closure is not related to IPB5 development and has been done for MONTHS already.5 points -
We don't use AI on a wide scale like that, and I don't think AI is quite there yet. I use AI in a few ways, but you always have to check the output as it's often wrong, or uses method names, and database table columns that don't exist. I use Github Copilot which has access to our Github repository so it can learn about our code and make sensible suggestions from either prompts, or auto-complete, for example: CleanShot 2024-07-18 at 09.01.20.mp4 I sometimes use ChatGPT to avoid looking up syntax or functions and to avoid a bit of trial and error which probably saves 5-10 minutes on a bad day. These tools can help a little, but they don't really wholesale fix issues and find errors. I think that'll come eventually. During development of Invision Community 5, we have several safeguards in place to minimise bugs. Every single change is put into review via a pull request before it is merged into the development branch. The review has an automated PHP lint tool that checks for syntax issues and won't allow it to be merged if it contains them. We also do a human review on not only the code, but also the change to make sure it does what we wanted it to do. Some of these reviews go back and forth for weeks, others are merged quickly. That said, bugs are part of software development, that's why we have alpha and beta testing. The v3 to v4 transition was complicated as it was a complete rewrite from scratch, we had a much smaller development team and it took much longer than originally planned.5 points

I probably check into this thread 3x a day, most days as well as the news section... Anyhow, just popping my head up to say hello and mention the obvious about everyone being super freakin excited and waiting with bated breath. Can't wait to play with this new version nd very, very much looking forward to being able to run it.5 points

Various ways to do it, this is possibly the easiest. You could even add custom CSS to float it and pin it to the bottom of the page. CleanShot 2024-08-14 at 14.26.19.mp44 points

This is not true. Plugins how they exist today will be going away but something like this will be certainly possible still by a third party author. Back to top also is better suited by the OS. No need to clunk up the UI. iOS and desktop have this built in. I’m unsure if Android offers this but you only have so much space on mobile, I’m against clutter and accidental clicks that change the view.4 points

It's not something we're considering. Our cloud platform is a mixture of many technologies and micro services from AWS and other service providers. They wouldn't really fit on a docker image.4 points

Extra column on exported RSS feed
Emediate and 3 others reacted to Adriano Faria for a topic
Is it possible to add an extra column to the exported RSS feed without a hook, as I will need this functionality on IPS5 as well? - \IPS\core\Rss::generate() /* We have to use get() to ensure CDATA tags wrap the title properly */ $title = \IPS\Member::loggedIn()->language()->get( "rss_export_title_{$this->_id}" ); $description = \IPS\Member::loggedIn()->language()->get( "rss_export_title_{$this->_id}_desc" ); $document = \IPS\Xml\Rss::newDocument( $this->url(), $title, $description ); foreach( $results AS $result ) { $result->addToRssFeed( $document ); } return $document->asXML(); } Thank you.4 points -

Millions of URLs in Google Search console with "&csrfKey=" after 4.7.18 update
Jim M and 2 others reacted to Stuart Silvester for a topic
Robots exclusion (including robots.txt) is literally a standard: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc9309 CSRF Keys are required on anything that changes the state of the application. The theme and language selectors are slightly different in how they work, they're forms that POST data when the buttons (themes) are selected. They still have CSRF key protection on them. In the time that you've been repeatedly complaining, the bug report has been reviewed (as Marc said it would), addressed (for .19) and closed.3 points -
Feature Request: Ability to set a universal subscription end date
PanSevence and 2 others reacted to HighlanderICT for a topic
As asked in the V5 forum, and suggested to put in feedback, in addition to traditional subscription options, we would like to see the option to be able to state a specified subscription end date for all users/purchasers of a specific subscription. There are possibly a few use-case scenarios for this but in our case, we run a scheme to sponsor a player for our football team for the season. The season has a specified end-date. However, because we typically gather the sponsorship fees over a 3–4-week time period, the expiry dates are all over the place. We would want the term to start whenever it is ordered but want all subscriptions to end on the same date (for example May 31st each year) which we would be able to specify in the subscription. Currently I do this as a product and have to go into the DB itself and modify the expiry dates which is somewhat workable but not ideal.3 points -

Too late! Haha. We've been preparing for 6 months now. Removing redundant plugins, redeveloping others into apps, trying to second guess what we will and won't be able to do. Overall, it's been a long overdue process for us anyway, with at one stage over 60 different plugins and various things! Our board is running all the better for it now, but bring on V5!3 points

Appreciate the reply, thank you. Other than follow along and engage on the forum, are there any suggestions on what to we could do to potentially ready ourselves? Unsure if there’s ever been a sort of hit list developed both pre upgrade and post upgrade, which might be a good idea if not already done. Suppose it’s a good time to think about content structure and organization, but anything else you might suggest as far as front running some stuff to help community owners get prepared as we wait?3 points

We have to kind of feel our way through it. We have milestones, like: Alpha 1 Upgradable Alphas Upgradable from 4.x Alphas Beta x lots Final But the timescales are really determined by how much feedback and how many bug reports we get. Rarely, we need to rethink a feature or code and do a bit of reworking. I would expect the beta process to be fairly short given how thorough we are with the alpha. We've yet to build zips and have people install it on various servers which always adds a little volume to the tracker. That'll be coming up fairly soon.3 points

When viewing a “mega topic” (let’s say one which would typically span 20+ pages), how would infinite scrolling work? Infinite scrolling would be nice for smaller topics, but my brain can’t think of a nice way to handle long topics. If I viewed that “mega topic” for the first time, I’d be taken to post #1. Imagine needing to scroll 20+ pages of content just to read the most recent reply. Infinite scrolling is tough to implement in large topics unless it’s paired with a “scroll spy” sort of element (which lets you drag a slider to speed through the topic). Paginated content makes it easy to skip through large amounts of content, or return to earlier parts of a topic, using a very common and reliable UI. It even gives you a general idea on the size of the topic (a lot of pages = a lot of content), which isn’t obvious on an infinite scrolling page - you’d just keep scrolling with no hints on how close you are to the end (unless the UI was redesigned to convey this information). Even Google is reverting back to paginated content following their attempt at infinite scrolling, but that’s likely due to other reasons than the ones we’ve discussed. 🤷♂️3 points

Invision Community v5: An update, and next steps

It depends on the betas 🙂 May well be before then. You will be able to upgrade Yes, version 5 will be available on our classic offering. There arent any planned. Thats not to say prices will be the same forever, of course lol. But nothing planned at present There are no plans for this at present. Feel free to post within our feedback area if you wish to see things like this added in the future. I would think however that dropbox and google drive probably wouldnt be suitable for the file storage side of a site2 points -

Also do you know if version 5 will add Dropbox and/or Google Drive support for files? Amazon S3 bucket is just to darn expensive.. having a large HDD on a VPS is expensive so Dropbox and Google Drive are pretty inexpensive for alot of space so it would be ideal to store files off the server.2 points -

Pages Vs Articles - Having a hard time understanding what a Article is ?
Brian Correll and one other reacted to Marc for a topic
Pages is an application in which you can create pages or databases of pages in. Those pages could be named anything you like, and the databases and records could also be named anything you like. When you are looking at articles, that is just a pages database which has been called articles. Databases contain records that can be given a name. In this case, articles. So you have articles, which are stored in a database also named articles, which are within the pages application on our software. Of course you can create any number of things with the pages application, rather that articles. In an example here, we have created a database named recipes2 points -

Supplier hacked
mountaininteractive and one other reacted to Randy Calvert for a topic
So... let's pause here for a moment to consider a few things: This does not appear to be an IPS problem. It appears to be the problem of a specific 3rd party resource provider. This does not appear to be impacting a large swath of IPS customers, so this would seem to suggest this was not an exploit in the IPS software itself. The domain does NOT appear to be hosted by IPS cloud. It's pointed to Hivelocity. If the domain is supposed to be hosted by IPS, that means the DNS for the domain was hijacked. (Not an IPS issue.) The domain is not using IPS' name servers... they're using the default Namecheap registrar name servers. (This leads me to believe the site is self-hosted) If the domain is supposed to be self-hosted, it looks like the self-hosted web hosting account or their server/VPS, is hijacked or that the compromise happened by some other means (either weak 3rd party resources, other non-IPS software running on the site, etc.) No one except the site owner (the 3rd party resource author) can say exactly what happened with their site and if any data was compromised. By default, things like credit card and password information is encrypted by the IPB software. You might want to reach out to that provider directly for assistance as IPS itself cannot do anything in this case.2 points -

This is an aside, but some general thoughts on reading and browsing multi-page topics: - in v5, there will probably be even less reason to be browsing all of the pages in a multi-page topic with newer features like Topic Summary, helpful, and solutions. For users who are goal-seeking and solution-oriented, they're going to want the fastest and easiest path to their query. For multi-page topics that are social in nature where each post is part of the story, they're going to want to read all the posts (or at least the most reacted posts) - the entire concept of a page with 25 replies (why not 26 replies? Why not 100 replies?) is so Internet 2000s. In a world of mobile first, we really ought to have infinite scroll up or scroll down of prior posts.2 points

Invision Community v5 takes a fresh approach to tagging and content discovery. It overhauls the concept to bring content across different sections together with a beautiful new tag page. Tagging is a powerful concept but underused with Invision Community 4 due to overly complex interfaces in different areas of the suite, a confusing open tagging model option and no real benefit in content discovery beyond a simple list of content items. A driving force behind Invision Community 5 is the question of how we can help time-pressured community members find the content that most interests them. Invision Community has robust taxonomy through forum and category structures, but what about content in less visible areas such as Blogs, galleries or Events? How can we bring those together to homogenise the type of content and focus on the content itself? Taxonomy via tagging across all applications in the community suite is the answer. However, we needed to re-approach how tagging was implemented in the Invision Community to bring our new vision to life. Out with the old The current tagging system is implemented loosely, allowing open tagging, which is more akin to hashtags than high-level taxonomy. Allowing forums, albums, and blog categories to define their own tags turns tagging into more of a status label, which does nothing to help bring disparate content together. In with the new With a new focus on taxonomy and content discovery, we set about rebuilding tagging for Invision Community 5. The UI to tag items is the same, but now each defined, globally available tag has its own page with cover image and ability to feature items within that tag page. A uniform approach to different content items in the UI breaks down the barrier between content types and focuses solely on the content. Tags featured on its page are automatically displayed on the community Featured Content page. Finally, tags can now be followed, allowing your community to get a daily or weekly digest of all new tagged items, bringing people back to read more of the content they love. Let’s take a closer look In Invision Community 5, all tags are defined in the Admin Control Panel. The ability to use open tagging and per-node tags has been removed, but don’t worry—the upgrade system will offer conversion for those tags. Once defined, the tags are available for all content types and feature on a dedicated new tag page. This page features cover photos and more information on the tag via a description. Content from across your suite will be displayed on this page. If a single piece of content has multiple tags, it will appear on every relevant tag page making it easy to have content in multiple areas. If you want to permanently or temporarily feature individual content, perhaps your latest news or product release, you can do so right from the tag page. Featured content will show on the community’s Featured Content Page. Blurring the lines Now that we have an attractive and focused page for each tag, we can start to blur the lines between applications and, indeed, forums and categories, offering a new way to organise content. For some communities, the need for multiple forums to categorise content is diminished, and instead, tagging can be used to separate and find content from across the community. Tags can be featured in the menu system, offering new ways into your community for new visitors, regular community members, and even those who visit daily. Invision Community 5 is fearless in challenging past decisions or streamlining features to make them stronger and more focused. Our new approach to tagging takes a vague and underutilised concept and pushes it front and centre in any content strategy. How will you use it in your community?2 points
