Brayan Bello

BOS Starting Pitcher #66

Brayan Bello surrendered four runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the Mets.

Nine of the 17 balls in play that Bello allowed tonight were hit hard, and while the three hardest of those actually turned into four outs, the others did some damage. Bello dropped to 12-7 with a 4.75 ERA, but he’ll probably bounce back next time out against the White Sox.
Trevor Story

BOS Shortstop #10

Trevor Story played five innings at shortstop and went 0-for-3 for Triple-A Worcester in his second rehab game Monday.

Story went 2-for-4 as a DH in his first game Sunday. The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham is hearing that Story, out since April with a torn labrum, could come off the IL as soon as Saturday. He’d presumably become Boston’s starting shortstop, making Ceddanne Rafaela a center fielder and second baseman.
Vaughn Grissom

BOS Shortstop #5

Vaughn Grissom hit a three-run homer and walked Sunday for Triple-A Worcester.

Grissom might finally have found his stroke; he’s hit .393 with two homers and 13 RBI in his last seven games. It’s probably too late to put him into Boston’s plans for this month, but a strong finish would make him a more interesting option going into what figures to be a pretty crowded second base situations next year.
Rafael Devers

BOS Third Baseman #11

Rafael Devers went 1-for-4 against the Tigers on Sunday.

Devers is 1-for-13 with four strikeouts in his last three games since he received a few days off to rest his sore shoulder. It was a rough series for Devers in Detroit. He got one hit and it was just a single. His bat looked slow all weekend. Maybe he’ll turn it around next week, but his shoulder is certainly an issue to monitor. Devers is hitting .284 with a .919 OPS and 80 RBI on the year.
Cooper Criswell

BOS Starting Pitcher #64

Cooper Criswell tossed four shutout innings and got a no-decision against the Tigers on Sunday.

Criswell gave up zero hits, walked none and struck out five. Criswell was curiously pulled from the game after four perfect innings and only 52 pitches against the Tigers. Rich Hill came in for the fifth inning and immediately gave up the lead as he served up a hanging curveball that Spencer Torkelson hit out for a two-run home run. Criswell threw 72 and 80 pitches in his last two starts, though he didn’t complete five innings in those starts either. He has a 1.50 ERA and nine strikeouts in 12 innings over his last three starts now. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to face the White Sox at home next week.
Chase Shugart

BOS Relief Pitcher #61

Red Sox recalled RHP Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester.

Shugert made his major league debut last month and allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings in his lone appearance. He had a 4.55 ERA in 65 1/3 innings for Worcester this year.
Enmanuel Valdez

BOS Third Baseman #47

Red Sox recalled INF Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester.

Valdez, who has hit .224/.282/.400 in 189 plate appearances for the Red Sox this season, will join Nick Sogard, Romy Gonzalez and Mickey Gasper in the mix at second base for now. The Red Sox might get Trevor Story back later this month, pushing Ceddanne Rafaela to second.
Enmanuel Valdez

BOS Third Baseman #47

The Red Sox plan to recall Enmanuel Valdez and Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester when rosters expand on Sunday.

The reason for the decision to promote Valdez instead of Vaughn Grissom is due to the fact that Grissom needs every day at-bats so they don’t want him playing sporadically at the big-league level. Valdez has hit .224/.282/.400 with six homers and 27 RBI in 170 at-bats with the Red Sox this season.
Tyler O'Neill

BOS Right Fielder #17

Tyler O’Neill went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk against the Tigers on Saturday.

O’Neill put the only run on the board for the Red Sox in the first inning, taking Tarik Skubal deep for a solo homer. It would be all Boston could do against the left-hander. O’Neill later drew a walk in the ninth. It was the 25th home run of the season for the 29-year-old outfielder. He’s slashing .253/.342/.521 with 64 runs scored, 50 RBI, and four steals across 389 plate appearances.
Nick Pivetta

BOS Starting Pitcher #37

Nick Pivetta allowed two runs with six strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Tigers on Saturday.

Pivetta tossed a clean first inning, then gave up a two-run double to Trey Sweeney in the second. He settled in nicely in what would be a pitcher’s duel with Tarik Skubal, ending his day after six frames while striking out six batters with just the two runs allowed. The 31-year-old right-hander will take a 4.53 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and a 141/28 K/BB ratio across 117 1/3 innings into a start against the White Sox in Boston on Friday.
