James Wood

WAS Left Fielder #29

James Wood went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs and a walk in a 4-3 win over the Marlins on Sunday.

It’s amazing to watch Wood play as a 21-year-old and both look and feel like the best player on the field. Both of his home runs were hit to left-center field, traveled at least 426 feet, and sent the Nationals’ lead from one to two. On the season, he has a .273/.364/.429 slash line with seven homers and 12 steals in 66 games. That comes with just two pulled fly balls and he’s been caught stealing seven times. It’s scary to think of how good he can be once he irons out some of the kinks in his game.
MacKenzie Gore

WAS Starting Pitcher #1

MacKenzie Gore allowed two hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts across six innings in a win over the Marlins on Sunday.

This game felt more like Gore from last season than the first half of this one because the command wasn’t quite there, but the stuff was so good that the Marlins couldn’t catch up. He hung an inordinate number of curveballs and none were hit harder than 85.0 MPH. His fastball was often in the heart of the zone and the Marlins fouled off 17 of 28 they swung at. He will head to Chicago in his next start to face the Cubs.
CJ Abrams

WAS Shortstop #5

CJ Abrams (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Sunday’s tilt with the Marlins.

That will make three straight games missed for Abrams after being scratched Friday because of the shoulder injury he suffered Thursday. The 23-year-old should still be considered day-to-day, but it’s that point in the year where day-to-day because a little less likely with so little of the season left. Nasim Nuñez gets the start at shortstop while Abrams gets better.
Jose Tena

WAS Shortstop #8

José Tena went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in a 4-1 win over the Marlins on Saturday.

Tena knocked a base hit to lead off the fourth inning and stole second before scoring on a base hit by Keibert Ruiz. He later took Valente Bellozo deep for a solo homer in the sixth. The 23-year-old third baseman has been solid in his limited time with the Nationals, slashing .306/.342/.434 with three homers and five steals across 117 plate appearances.
Juan Yepez

WAS First Baseman #18

Juan Yepez went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk against the Marlins on Saturday.

Yepez drew a walk in the first inning, then later took George Soriano deep for a solo homer in the eighth to give the Nationals an insurance run. It was Yepez’s sixth home run of the season while slashing .284/.340/.443 with 22 RBI across 203 plate appearances.
Kyle Finnegan

WAS Relief Pitcher #67

Kyle Finnegan struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save against the Marlins on Saturday.

Finnegan was summoned to close out the game with a three-run lead in the ninth inning. He gave up leadoff single before inducing a ground ball double-play and striking out the final batter to end the game with his 38th save.
Patrick Corbin

WAS Starting Pitcher #46

Patrick Corbin allowed one run with six strikeouts over six innings in a win over the Marlins on Saturday.

Corbin had an excellent outing against the Marlins on Saturday. He tossed a clean first inning, then gave up a run on a double and a base hit in the second. Corbin scattered just one more hit and one walk over four more scoreless innings, striking out six on his way to a win. The 35-year-old left-hander will take a 5.45 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and a 132/52 K/BB ratio across 165 innings into a start against the Cubs in Chicago on Thursday.
DJ Herz

WAS Starting Pitcher #74

DJ Herz allowed four hits and one run with five strikeouts over five innings in a 4-1 win over the Marlins on Friday.

Yet another solid start for Herz. He mixed his fastball, slider, and changeup well against the Marlins’ right-handed lineup to keep them off-balance and keep runs off the board. There were few tense moments, but he was able to bear down when they came. Like in the third inning when he loaded the bases with one out before striking out Connor Norby and Jake Burger, probably the two best hitters in this lineup, back-to-back to end the inning. His ERA is down to 2.92 since the beginning of August and he’ll look to stay hot in his next scheduled start against the Mets in Citi Field.
Kyle Finnegan

WAS Relief Pitcher #67

Kyle Finnegan allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn a save on Friday against the Marlins.

What a legendary season it’s been for Finnegan. Presumed to lose the job at any minute heading into April, he trails only Ryan Helsley and Emmanuel Clase in saves and has only blown one of his last 14 tries. He’s one of the true MVPs of the fantasy baseball season.
Dylan Crews

WAS Right Fielder #3

Dylan Crews went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored on Friday against the Marlins.

Crews has been fun since being called up. Already installed as the lead-off hitter, he pushed the envelope in the first inning of this game by legging out an infield single, stealing second, stealing third, and coming around to score on an error from Edward Cabrera. The Nationals would struggle to muster anything else against Cabrera, so Crews’ aggressiveness provided a valuable spark. He’s up to three homers and eight stolen bases just 16 games into his short career.
