Anthony Rizzo

NYY First Baseman #48

Anthony Rizzo is out of the Yankees lineup Sunday versus the Red Sox.

It’s not often in his career that Rizzo has been held out against a righty, but he’s hit just .191/.277/.262 in 47 plate appearance since coming off the injured list. Oswaldo Cabrera is playing first base today.
Clayton Beeter

NYY Starting Pitcher #29

Clayton Beeter rejoined Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and pitched two scoreless innings Saturday.

Beeter, who previously made two rehab appearances for Double-A Somerset, had been out since May 15 with a shoulder injury. He probably would have made starts or pitched in relief for the Yankees this summer had he remained healthy. As is, he still might be an option in relief in the postseason, but it’s unlikely that the team would turn to him.
Gerrit Cole

NYY Starting Pitcher #45

Gerrit Cole allowed seven runs with two strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Saturday.

Cole was cruising through three innings before giving up three runs on two walks, a double, and a base hit. Things continued to unravel in the fifth. Cole loaded the bases on a single, hit batter, and a walk. Rafael Devers drove in two runs on a base hit. Masataka Yoshida drove in two more on a single, making it seven runs on Cole. That would do it for the 34-year-old right-hander. He struck out two. Cole will look to bounce back when he takes a 3.97 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 87/27 K/BB ratio over 79 1/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in Oakland on Friday.
Aaron Judge

NYY Right Fielder #99

Aaron Judge hit a grand slam off Cam Booser in the seventh as the Yankees came back to beat the Red Sox 5-4 on Friday.

It was a tired Red Sox pen, so Alex Cora turned to Zack Kelly and Booser with a four-run lead in the seventh and got what he deserved. Judge might well have gotten the better off Booser anyway, but it helped that a 1-0 strike that wasn’t even borderline was called a ball. Judge then sent the next pitch, a middle-middle fastball, into the stands in left-center. It was Judge’s first homer since Aug. 25 and his eighth career grand slam.
Clarke Schmidt

NYY Starting Pitcher #36

Clarke Schmidt yielded two runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Red Sox.

Both runs came on Masataka Yoshida’s homer in the sixth. One batter before that, Tyler O’Neill hit a long fly that would have been a homer in 19 ballparks, but it wound up as an out here. Yoshida’s was a no-doubter, traveling 408 feet to right-center. Schmidt has a start in Seattle coming up next, making him worth using in mixed leagues.
Luke Weaver

NYY Starting Pitcher #30

Luke Weaver struck out five of the seven batters he faced in earning a save against the Red Sox on Friday.

Weaver has given up 10 homers this year, but he’s been exceptional when he’s kept the ball in the park. He has two saves, a win and a hold in his last four appearances with Clay Holmes in the doghouse. He will need at least one day off after throwing 35 pitches tonight.
DJ LeMahieu

NYY Second Baseman #26

DJ LeMahieu said he had a cortisone shot for his sore hip and that he hopes to come off the IL before the end of the season.

LeMahieu will be eligible to return for the final nine days, but it might not happen, at least not unless someone else on the roster gets hurt. He’s just not in the Yankees’ plans at the moment.
Giancarlo Stanton

NYY Right Fielder #27

The Yankees are planning on sitting Giancarlo Stanton and DHing Aaron Judge in Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.

That will allow both Alex Verdugo and Jasson Domínguez start in the outfield. Aaron Boone was forced to reveal the plan tonight because of questions regarding Domínguez’s absence.
Jasson Dominguez

NYY Center Fielder #89

Jasson Domínguez is sitting in favor of Alex Verdugo for the second time in three days Friday.

The Yankees are probably hoping for a little Verdugo magic against his former team; he has gone 13-for-42 with two homers and four doubles in nine games against the Red Sox this season. Still, this usage just makes all of the Domínguez-everyday player talk out to be a lie.
Juan Soto

NYY Left Fielder #22

Juan Soto hit a game-winning double in the 10th inning to give the Yankees a 2-1 win over the Red Sox on Thursday.

Soto went the other way to score Gleyber Torres and give New York the extra-inning win. Soto also drew a walk because of course he did, and he’s now up to 101 RBI. The 25-year-old has been sensational in his first year with the Yankees, and MLB teams should be salivating over the chance to potentially sign him this winter. The good ones will be, anyway.
