Angela Alsobrooks won a U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday to become the first Black candidate to be elected senator in Maryland, as the Democrat prevailed in a blue state against popular Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan. The race had been widely watched with control of the Senate potentially at stake. Alsobrooks campaigned heavily on abortion rights in a year that Maryland voters approved a ballot measure to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.
The gender gap is considered a crucial factor in the presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Both candidates tried to turn the gap to their advantage, with Harris making reproductive freedom a centerpiece of her campaign while Trump focused heavily on motivating men to turn out to the polls. Men and women have long voted differently in presidential races, with the gender gap averaging 19 points in exit polls since 1996.
Republicans prevailed Tuesday in a must-win Senate race in Ohio, as Trump-backed Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno defeated Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown with control of the chamber hanging in the balance. Moreno, 57, who was born in Colombia, will be the first Latino to represent Ohio in the Senate. Moreno also worked to tie Brown, a third-term incumbent, to President Joe Biden and his vice president, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, on border security.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez is seeking a second term in New Mexico’s swing district along the U.S.-Mexico border, in a rematch against the Republican he ousted in 2022, as votes were tallied on Tuesday evening. GOP challenger Yvette Herrell waged her fourth consecutive campaign for Congress in the majority-Latino district that stretches from the border to Albuquerque. Separately, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich won reelection Tuesday to a third term in New Mexico, defeating Republican nominee Nella Domenici — the daughter of longtime U.S. Sen. Pete V. Domenici — in her first bid for public office.
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, of Texas, sought to fend off an underdog challenge Tuesday from Democratic Rep. Colin Allred in one of the year's most expensive races, which is testing shifts in America's biggest red state and could factor into the fight for U.S. Senate control. Although The Associated Press had not yet called the race, Cruz, who walked out to the song “Eye of the Tiger,” claimed victory at a campaign watch party in his home town of Houston. Allred had not yet spoken to a crowd of supporters in Dallas.
Republican incumbents Ashley Hinson and Randy Feenstra won reelection Tuesday as Iowa Republicans seek to hold onto all four of the state's congressional seats. Hinson defeated Democrat Sarah Corkery in the 2nd District. Feenstra won election to a third term in the sprawling 4th District, made up of 36 of Iowa’s 99 counties, defeating Democrat Ryan Melton.
Three-term incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester of Montana faces perhaps his toughest reelection challenge yet on Tuesday, with control of the Senate on the line in a state that has veered sharply rightward since the 68-year-old grain farmer's first election. Republicans have pinned their hopes on Tim Sheehy, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and founder of an aerial firefighting company. Sheehy, 38, had early backing from party leaders including former President Donald Trump, clearing the political newcomer's path to win the June primary.
Four incumbent Democrats faced challengers in U.S. House districts in Massachusetts. Republicans and independents have had a tough time winning seats in Congress in the heavily Democratic state. No Republican has been elected to the U.S. House in Massachusetts in nearly three decades.
U.S. Sen. John Barrasso and U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman won reelection in Wyoming after the Republican incumbents beat little-known Democrats in the GOP-leaning state. Heavily favored to win in deep-red Wyoming, Barrasso defeated Scott Morrow, a retired postal union official from Laramie, to secure a third full term in office. “The people of Wyoming have been just absolutely tremendous to me in the past year, not just in the election but personally as well as I lost my wife, Bobbi,” Barrasso said after the AP called the race.
In a presidential swing state where elections are typically intense contests, Nevada's U.S. Senate race has been unusually sleepy. The campaign pits Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen — a former computer programmer and synagogue president — against Republican Sam Brown, a retired Army captain whose face is still scarred from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan. Both parties agree the state is in the midst of a tight race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, but that the Senate race has drawn little notice, though Rosen has emerged as the favorite.
A former Kansas attorney general’s successful political comeback in Tuesday’s election kept an open U.S. House seat in Republican hands while the only Democrat in the state’s congressional delegation was trying to fend off a GOP challenger. Republican Derek Schmidt won the 2nd Congressional District seat held by retiring two-term Republican Rep. Jake LaTurner. Schmidt, who served three terms as attorney general, was coming off a narrow loss in the 2022 governor’s race.
U.S. Rep. John Curtis will succeed Mitt Romney in the U.S. Senate after the Republican breezed to victory over his Democratic opponent in deeply red Utah. Curtis defeated Democrat Caroline Gleich, a mountaineer and environmental activist from Park City, in a race that often centered around each candidate’s climate policies. The incoming senator leads the Conservative Climate Caucus on Capitol Hill and has developed a reputation for pushing back against party leaders such as Donald Trump who falsely claim that climate change is a hoax.
Illinois Democrats in congressional races across the state hope to fend off challenges from Republicans fighting to keep their party's control of the U.S. House. The state's most competitive races involve two first-term representatives seeking reelection. Rep. Eric Sorensen is facing Republican Joe McGraw in the 17th Congressional District, while Rep. Nikki Budzinski is being challenged by Republican Joshua Loyd in the 13th District.
Virginia’s marquee matchups for U.S. House races in Tuesday’s election feature tight contests in a district being vacated by three-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger and a district known to flip between Democratic and Republican control. In Virginia’s 7th House District, Republican Derrick Anderson and Democrat Eugene Vindman are entrenched in a competitive race to succeed Spanberger, who is vacating her seat in favor of a gubernatorial bid next year. Down the coast, Republican U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans is trying to cement her hold on her seat in a district known to swing between both parties.
Democrats held on to both U.S. House seats in Rhode Island in Tuesday’s election. In the 1st Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, the first Black representative in Congress from Rhode Island, easily beat his Republican challenger Allen Waters. In the 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Seth Magaziner, the former state treasurer in Rhode Island, defeated Republican Steve Corvi.
Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff won the California U.S. Senate seat long held by the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Tuesday after a lopsided, low-key contest. The Los Angeles-area congressman, who rose to national prominence as the lead prosecutor in then-President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, defeated Republican former baseball star Steve Garvey, who had tried to parlay his sports celebrity into a political upset. In a year when control of the Senate is in play, Democrats were favored to easily hold the seat in the liberal-leaning state where a Republican candidate hasn’t won a Senate race since 1988, when President Ronald Reagan was in the White House.
Two justices who split on whether Arkansas voters should have the chance to scale back the state's abortion ban are both vying to lead the state Supreme Court, though the election won't affect the court's conservative tilt. Justices Rhonda Wood and Karen Baker are running to replace Chief Justice Dan Kemp in Tuesday’s election, where all four of Arkansas’ Republican congressmen fended off challenges from Democrats who were trying to break the GOP’s hold on the state’s federal seats. No matter if Wood or Baker wins, history will be made: For the first time, Arkansas will elect a woman to chief justice of its Supreme Court.
Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe won the Missouri governor’s race Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Crystal Quade to maintain the GOP’s grip on the state’s government. Kehoe will succeed GOP Gov. Mike Parson, who chose him to be his second-in-command in 2018. Parson was barred by term limits from seeking reelection.
Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester will become the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the Senate after she defeated Republican Eric Hansen and independent candidate Mike Katz, NBC News projects.
Longtime incumbent Democrat Sanford Bishop won a 17th term in Congress Tuesday, defeating Republican Wayne Johnson in southwest Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District. Bishop’s victory came as Brian Jack, a one-time aide to former President Donald Trump, won election to his first term in the U.S. House in a district south and west of Atlanta. Republicans maintained their 9-5 majority among Georgia’s congressional seats, with all incumbents winning reelection, including Marjorie Taylor Greene in northwest Georgia’s 14th District and Lucy McBath in a newly redrawn 6th District on the west side of metro Atlanta.
Former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte was elected governor of New Hampshire on Tuesday, defeating Democratic former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig to keep the office under Republican control for another two years. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu’s decision not to seek a fifth two-year term set up on one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country, with voters choosing between one candidate trying to jump from local to statewide office and another seeking to bring federal experience to the Statehouse. With the win, Ayotte became the third woman elected governor of New Hampshire, following Democrats Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, both of whom are now in the Senate.
Democrat Angela Alsobrooks will win the Maryland Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan, whose candidacy made the race to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin competitive in this otherwise deep-blue state.
Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles has won reelection in Tennessee while facing an FBI investigation into his campaign finances. Ogles, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, defeated Democrat Maryam Abolfazli in the Republican-favoring district that includes a section of left-leaning Nashville and winds through five conservative-voting counties.
Republican Mike Braun won the Indiana governor’s race Tuesday, defeating Democrat Jennifer McCormick, a former Republican who split with the party after serving as the state’s schools superintendent. The victory by Braun, a U.S. senator who’s the wealthy founder of a national auto parts distribution business, extends the GOP’s 20-year-hold on the state’s top office in deep red Indiana. Braun, 70, will succeed outgoing Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb, who could not seek a third term because of term limits.
Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren won a third term in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, further cementing her role as a key progressive voice in the state and on Capitol Hill. Warren fended off a challenge from Republican John Deaton, an attorney who moved to the state from Rhode Island earlier this year. Deaton tried to portray the former Harvard Law School professor as out of touch with ordinary Bay State residents.
Democrat Angela Alsobrooks racked up a big lead with Maryland's large early vote share and kept it close with Republican Larry Hogan among Election Day voters at the time The Associated Press called the race. Alsobrooks was carrying the populous Washington suburbs, where she holds county-elected office, and won in Baltimore and its periphery as well, when the race was called at 9:32 p.m. She was winning in deeply Democratic areas and won with moderate voters, whom Hogan courted in a state that leans Democratic particularly in presidential years. Hogan would need to win about 55% of the outstanding ballots at the time the race was called, greater than the share he was getting.
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein was elected governor on Tuesday, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and maintaining Democratic leadership of the chief executive’s office in a state where Republicans have recently controlled the legislature and appeals courts. Stein, a Harvard-trained lawyer, former state senator and the state’s chief law enforcement officer since 2017, will succeed fellow Democrat Roy Cooper, who was term-limited from seeking reelection. Robinson's campaign was greatly hampered by a damning report in September that he had posted messages on an online pornography website, including that he was a “black NAZI."
Democratic Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego, an Iraq War veteran, faces well-known former television news anchor and staunch Donald Trump ally Kari Lake in Tuesday's election for U.S. Senate in a state with a recent history of extremely close elections. The race is one of a handful that will determine the Senate majority. It is a test of the strength of the anti-Trump coalition that has powered the rise of Democrats in Arizona, which was reliably Republican until 2016.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott on Tuesday won reelection to a fifth term in the heavily Democratic state of Vermont. The popular governor beat political newcomer Esther Charlestin, a Democrat-Progressive who is an educator, consultant, and co-chair of the Vermont Commission on Women. Also on the ballot were independents Kevin Hoyt and Eli “Poa” Mutino and minor party candidate June Goodband.
Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein will win North Carolina’s gubernatorial race, CNN projects, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, whose campaign struggled as his history of incendiary remarks became public.
South Carolina Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace on Tuesday cemented her hold on her seat in a state that doesn’t mind sending people back to Congress for decades. Mace defeated Democratic businessman and former International African American Museum CEO Michael Moore to win a third term. “After tonight, anyone who dare takes a shot at me — you better not miss,” Mace said Tuesday night at her victory party.

Delaware has been a reliably Democratic state, with a Republican last winning it in 1988. Delaware is President Biden’s home state, and it is where Harris’s campaign…
A massive lead gained from votes cast before Election Day helped deliver victory to North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat who handily defeated Republican Mark Robinson, the state's scandal-plagued lieutenant governor. Two factors were largely responsible for Stein's win. First, most of the state's votes were cast before Election Day — roughly three-quarters — and Stein won those by more than 16 percentage points.
It has been 18 years since Connecticut voted to send a Republican to Washington. Republican George Logan will try to end the party's long losing streak Tuesday in a rematch with U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, the three-term Democrat who defeated him two years ago by a margin of less than 1% of the vote. The race between Hayes and Logan is among the state's most closely watched contests on an Election Day when voters will also choose state legislators, a U.S. senator and the next U.S. president.
Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent beloved by progressives, won reelection Tuesday to a fourth six-year term in the U.S. Senate. Sanders defeated Republican Gerald Malloy, a U.S. Army veteran and businessman. Also on the ballot were independent candidate Steve Berry, as well as minor party candidates Mark Stewart Greenstein, Matt Hill and Justin Schoville.
Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) is the projected winner of North Dakota’s gubernatorial race, according to Decision Desk HQ. Armstrong, the Peace Garden State’s sole congressman, was heavily favored to win in the solid red state, which has not had a Democrat in the governor’s residence since 1992. He launched his bid to succeed Gov. Doug…
Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey easily won the West Virginia governor’s race Tuesday, using an endorsement from former U.S. President Donald Trump to catapult him to victory in the deep red state. Morrisey emphasized his role as a “conservative fighter” in the courts on issues ranging from abortion to transgender participation in sports to best Steve Williams, the Democratic mayor of West Virginia’s second-largest city of Huntington. “You deserve respect and dignity and a path for a better life,” Morrisey told cheering supporters at the Martinsburg Roundhouse event center, after the race was called.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) is projected to easily win another term in the House as all eyes look toward which Republican will lead their conference early next year, according to Decision Desk HQ. Scalise, who represents Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District, defeated a small handful of challengers, including several Republicans, for the seat, which encompasses…
