Americans are feeling increasingly better about the short-term path for inflation. The latest consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan revealed that consumers expect inflation to sit at 2.6% in a year, a decrease from last month's expectation of 2.7%. November's reading is the lowest since December 2020 and is within the 2.3% to 3.0% range seen in the two years before the pandemic. Expectations for long-run inflation did tick higher though, rising to 3.1% from 3% the month prior. The overall consumer sentiment index popped to a reading of 73, up from 71 in October. Interviews for the survey concluded on Monday and therefore don't capture any reactions to election results. The responses come as inflation has continued to trend lower throughout 2024. In September the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a popularly cited inflation reading, increased 2.4% over the prior year. This marked its lowest annual increase in prices since February 2021. Paramount reported third quarter earnings before the bell on Friday that showed further improvement in its streaming business as it gets ready to combine with Skydance Media. The media giant posted its second quarter of profit in a row for the segment. For the first nine months of the year, streaming losses stand at $211 million, a nearly $1 billion improvement from the $1.18 billion the company lost through the first nine months of last year. But overall revenue in the quarter missed expectations as the company booked continued declines in its linear TV business and saw a pullback in its studios segment. Warner Bros. Discovery stock rose as much as 17% on Thursday after the company reported strong streaming results in the third quarter that included its largest-ever quarterly subscriber growth since the launch of Max. But revenue missed expectations as the media giant struggled with a drop in its studios segment and continued declines from its linear TV business. Revenue came in at $9.62 billion, missing Bloomberg consensus expectations of $9.81 billion and a 3% drop compared to the $9.98 billion seen in Q3 2023. The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.05 versus a loss of $0.17 in the year-earlier period. Consensus expectations had anticipated a loss closer to $0.09 a share. Streaming was the bright spot in the quarter, with 7.2 million subscribers added, a beat compared to estimates of a 6.1 million net increase and the company's largest quarterly subscriber growth yet. The additions were also ahead of the 700,000 subscriber loss the company reported in the year-earlier period. Amid streaming's success, other pockets of the business remained under pressure.
