Post-election stock-market volatility seems to be kicking in. Stocks surged right after the election, but pulled back as investors contemplated the policy-, sector-, and economic-related pros and cons of the leadership change in Washington; came face-to-face with a suddenly more-hawkish Fed; and likely realized that shares prices may have come a bit too far and too fast after the election. That's a lot of action. With all that noise, insiders remain on the sidelines. Reviewing the major insider-sentiment barometers from Vickers Stock Research, we note that transaction volume is back to normal as earnings season is ending; the volume of Form 144 filings (indicating an intent to sell shares) is higher than normal; and the major eight-week sell/buy ratios remain in neutral territory but have weakened slightly. On a sector basis, insider buying outpaced selling in Energy over the last week, with shares valued at $23 million bought versus less than $15 million sold, for a bullish one-week sell/buy ratio of 0.64. Selling was greatest in Technology, with shares valued at roughly $456 million sold versus less than $20 million bought. Selling by insiders was also of note in the Industrial, Financial, and Materials sectors. This week, analysts at Vickers highlighted insider transactions of interest at Estee Lauder Cos. Inc. (NYSE: EL) and Rockwell Automation Inc. (NYSE: ROK).
