Phillips 66 indicted for violating Clean Water Act
(Reuters) -A grand jury indicted Phillips 66 for violating the federal Clean Water Act by illegally discharging 790,000 gallons of industrial wastewater into Los Angeles County's sewer system, and failing to report the violations to authorities. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada in Los Angeles said the Nov. 24, 2020 and Feb. 8, 2021 discharges from a Carson, California facility contained oil and grease concentrations that exceeded, by a respective 329 and 172 times, what Phillips 66's permits allowed. He said this threatened to release contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean, though there was no evidence this occurred, and endangered employees because oil and grease are flammable.
