The leader of Germany's Green Party in parliament sees a chance to pass legislation legalizing abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. Katharina Dröge told fellow Green politicians on Tuesday that a group of lawmakers pushing the motion has a real chance to form a legislative majority for the legislation before the country's early elections, which are expected to be held in February. Abortions are currently illegal under Section 218 of the German Criminal Code, although in practice they are available and not subject to punishment if performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy...

People often join a gym hoping it will help them shed those kilos. But exercise alone is not enough to lose weight, says Professor Johannes Wechsler, a doctor and nutrition specialist based in Germany. In an interview with dpa, he explains why your diet matters when looking to lose weight, and how you can adjust it accordingly. Is it possible to lose weight just by exercising more? Johannes Wechsler: Studies have shown that burning off a chocolate bar with about 500 calories requires running for at least an hour. So losing weight through physical activity alone is difficult. Torben Beltz, Angelique Kerber's long-time mentor, will be the new coach of German women's tennis but will not be in direct charge at the Billie Jean King Cup. The 48-year-old was unveiled at a press conference on Tuesday and faces a tough job given no German woman is in the top 50. Laura Siegemund (36 years old/ranked 83rd), Tatjana Maria (37/87) and Jule Niemeier (25/91) are the best three German women after Kerber's retirement. "We want to build on the successful era of Angelique Kerber and co. I don't think we're in such a bad position. But it won't happen in a few weeks," said Beltz. The ...

RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose is under no illusions about his job security after going the whole of November without a win in any competition. Leipzig looked to be Bayern Munich's main challengers in the Bundesliga after a strong start but have badly fallen away, with Saturday's 5-1 home hammering by Wolfsburg summing up their recent form. They have lost five out of five Champions League games and the German Cup third-round clash at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday is perhaps their last chance to stay in the running for a trophy this term. "I can say what I want: I need a win to calm the...

A majority of European Union health ministers on Tuesday signalled their support for extending smoke-free areas in a bid to reduce cancer deaths. Germany, which is among the EU members with the weakest smoking restrictions, abstained from the vote in Brussels on the non-binding recommendations. The aim of the new guidelines is to restrict smoking in public areas where children or other vulnerable people gather outdoors, like playgrounds, amusement parks, public swimming pools, restaurant terraces and public transport. The recommendations also target emerging tobacco products, like electronic c...
