UTEP men's basketball team dominant in home win vs. Seattle University

Playing with efficiency on offense and high energy on defense, the UTEP men's basketball team rolled to an 88-72 win vs. Seattle at the Don Haskins Center.

The Miners avenged a 12-point loss to Seattle last season in the Don Haskins Center.

UTEP has won three games in a row and is 6-2 overall. Seattle falls to 3-6. Saturday's game began a stretch where the Miners will play eight of nine games at home.

UTEP with big first half

The Miners dominated the first half and took a 48-23 lead into halftime.

Seattle scored the game's first three points but UTEP controlled the opening half the rest of the way.

UTEP scored 18 points off 12 Redhawks turnovers and made 20 of 33 from the field. Seattle was just 8 of 23 from the field.

Nine players scored for the Miners in the first half. Otis Frazier III led the Miners with 12 points, Derick Hamilton scored 10 points and Ahamad Bynum added 7 points. Frazier III was 5 of 6 from the field and Hamilton made all four of his shots.

UTEP with scoring balance on offense

Ten players scored in the game, led by Bynum with 19 points and Frazier III with 18 points. UTEP coach Joe Golding was pleased with his post players Hamilton, Kevin Kalu and Elijah Jones and praised their effort after the game.

Kalu finished with 13 points, Hamilton scored 12 points and Jones scored four points. They we're a combined 12 for 14 from the field.

UTEP shot 56.1% from the field, 41.2% from 3-point-range and 89.5% from the free throw line. The Miners finished with 18 assists, led by Frazier III with five and Corey Camper, Jr. and Devon Barnes with four apiece.

Bynum continues hot streak from 3-point range

Bynum made both of his 3-pointers and has now made 19 of 30 from beyond the arc. He entered the game No. 1 in the nation in 3-point percentage at 60.7 percent.

Overall, he was 7 of 9 from the field and has now made 29 of 51 for the season.

What UTEP coach Joe Golding said

"I thought the first 20 minutes were just great, were elite," Golding said. "We have good depth, eight guys that can start. It was good to be back home and we just want to keep improving."

What UTEP players Otis Frazier III and Ahamad Bynum said

"I worked hard and put up a lot of shots every day," Bynum said. "I let the game come to me and it was a good win."

Added Frazier III: "Defense is big for us. We want to force turnovers and give ourselves easy opportunities to score. We got lots of people involved on offense today and shared the ball well."

Up next for UTEP

The Miners will be on the road Wednesday at Louisville for a 5 p.m. start. The game be shown on the ACC Network.

UTEP will play its next home game on Dec. 16 vs. Tareleton State.
