  • Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term

A tad quietly, the so-called "Magnificent 7" have come back to life -- and in a big way. After many of the stocks topped out five months ago, they then built bullish bases before breaking out to all-time highs (ATHs) in November and December. And as they always do, momentum chasers have a clear shot at taking these and other mega-caps in the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) nicely higher into year end (and possibly into early 2025). When stocks in a sector and/or industry break out to all-time highs as a group, we take notice because so many buyers are sitting on top of a profit. The top 10 QQQ holdings make up about 53% of the ETF: AAPL (around 9%), NVDA and MSFT (8%), AMZN (5.6%), GOOGL, META and AVGO (5%), TSLA (4.6%), COST (3%) and NFLX (2.4%). The QQQs broke out to ATHs on November 6, pulled back, and then took off on November 18, rising almost 7% in 17 days and almost 5% in the past nine days as the slope of the advance steepened. AAPL broke out to ATHs on November 29, and it has been straight up since then. AMZN hit an ATH in early November, pulled back, and really started to spike on November 25. META reached an ATH back in September and has caught fire since the end of November. TSLA reached an ATH this week after a wild base that started back in November 2021. GOOGL jumped to a new high on Wednesday with massive volume. COST has been in ATH territory since early November, while NFLX has been at new highs over the past two months. NVDA hit new highs in recent months, but has pulled back. AVGO is very close to new highs. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
