Latest News View More Osamu Suzuki, who led Japanese automaker into India, dies at 94 Osamu Suzuki, an ingenious pennypincher who led Japan's Suzuki Motor for more than four decades and played a key role in turning India into a flourishing auto market, has died aged 94. The inexpensive, boxy, 660-cc cars specific to Japan benefited from generous tax breaks, but demanded a stringent reining-in of costs that proved to be a key part of the automaker's DNA. Even so, Suzuki's thriftiness was legendary: he would order factory ceilings lowered to save on air-conditioning and fly economy class on airplanes even at an advanced age. The estimates, disclosed on Thursday in a research paper, underscore the BOJ's resolve to keep pushing up short-term interest rates - now at 0.25% - to levels deemed neutral to the economy in coming years. The BOJ conducted estimates based on several scenarios, including one in which short-term rates move up to around 1-2% in the course of several years, while the spread between short- and long-term rates move between 0.25% point and 0.75% point. CFRA head of ETF data and analytics Aniket Ullal joins Wealth host Brad Smith to discuss ETFs' groundbreaking year and look ahead at what's next for ETFs in 2025. Ullal attributes the record-high ETF inflows to "a few things," including "the growth in active ETFs" with support from non-indexed ETFs, traditional indexed ETFs, as well as the launch of crypto ETFs like spot bitcoin (BTC-USD). Looking ahead to 2025, Ullal says, "We think $1 trillion is a hard act to follow ... this year was the perfect storm in terms of having very strong equity market performance." He adds, "Our projection for next year is that we expect ETF flows to be somewhere between about $500 billion to $1 trillion. That's a wide range, but probably not matching what we saw this year. That's not a bad number." He highlights ETFs exposed to the financial sector are likely to benefit from regulation under Trump, naming the Invesco KBW Bank ETF (KBWB), S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE), and ARK Fintech Innovation ETF (ARKF) as bullish picks. Monthly Sector Review We retain a recommended Over-Weight on the Utilities sector. Stocks in this sector have been positive throughout 2024 in anticipation of lower interest rates, and the group really took off in the third quarter as that possibility became a likelihood. In addition to the sector’s attraction as a source of income now that bond yields are coming down, we expect Utilities to benefit from providing the power needs of the fast-growing AI data center market. Meanwhile, corporate bond yields have headed higher as well, but not as rapidly as Treasury yields (as fixed-income investors are less concerned about a slowing economy and potential recession). As a consequence, spreads between corporate and Treasury bond yields have narrowed. The spread between AAA-rated corporate bonds and 10-year government bonds in November was 78 basis points (bps), below the 35-year average of 122 bps and down about 30 bps from August. The gap between the government 10-year bond yield and a BAA-rated bond (still investment grade) in November was 142 basis points, below the historical average spread of 229 bps and down about 40 bps in the past three months. We watch these spreads closely for a couple of reasons. First, from an asset-allocation standpoint, tight corporate bond spreads signal that corporate bond prices are above historical fair value, and we may look to under-weight the segment in our model portfolios. As well, from a broad market standpoint, the changes in the spreads offer clues to the bond market's view of corporate financial strength -- which appears to be improving given the narrowing spreads.
