Latest News View More New York Fed survey finds mixed inflation expectations in December U.S. consumers' outlook on the expected path of inflation was mixed in December amid rising worries about households' ability to make debt payments, a survey by the New York Federal Reserve showed on Monday. The regional Fed bank said in its latest Survey of Consumer Expectations that respondents see inflation a year from now steady at 3%, while the forecast for price pressures in three years ticked up to 3% from 2.6% in November and ebbed to 2.7% on a five-year timeframe from the prior month's 2.9% reading. It also found that uncertainty over the inflation outlook increased at the one- and three-year-ahead horizons but fell at the five-year perspective. ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is the oil industry's leader by almost every important metric, including profitability. The oil giant produced a peer-leading $8.6 billion in profits during the third quarter and a monster $17.6 billion of cash flow from operations, which also led international oil companies. Here's a look at whether that's a concern or investors should buy the oil stock on its profit dip. A Bond Selloff Is Rocking the World. You Might Want to Take the Other Side. Wall Street is really worried about bonds. What is spooking markets, however, is that much of the recent rise in yields doesn’t appear to reflect expectations of stronger economic growth. Rather, it might be the result of investors applying a higher discount or “term premium” to hold long-term bonds, estimates by the Federal Reserve suggest. India's TCS expects retail, manufacturing revival after banking recovery India's Tata Consultancy Services expects its retail and manufacturing clients in North America to step up spending on tech, following a similar upturn in its banking and financial services segment, a top executive of the nation's No. 1 software-services exporter, said. "We have heard about good holiday season sales (in the U.S.) that should boost consumer sentiment and manufacturing has some of the labour issues behind them," CFO Samir Seksaria told Reuters. Seksaria's cautious optimism highlights broader global economic uncertainties and sticky inflation that have forced clients to keep a leash on tech spending. Daily Spotlight: Global Stocks Priced at Discount to U.S. Stocks As worldwide markets are challenged in an environment of higher interest rates, ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the lingering battle between Russia and Ukraine, one thing has not changed: U.S. stocks are more expensive than global stocks. And with the large run-up in stock prices in 2023 and 2024, U.S. stocks have become even more expensive. Consider P/E ratios. The trailing P/E ratio on the S&P 500 is 28, above the global average of 16 and well above the 8-14 average P/Es for emerging markets stocks in China and Latin America. A review of yields tells a similar story. The current dividend yield for the S&P 500 is 1.2%, versus the global average of 2.8% and European, Australian, and Latin American yields of 3%-6%. Other nations with higher-than-average P/E ratios include Australia (based on prospects for a Chinese recovery), Saudi Arabia (due to its energy holdings), and Canada (despite the risk of tariffs). Taking a step back, a few reasons that investors generally are willing to pay a higher price for North American securities include the transparency of the U.S. financial system as well as the liquidity of U.S. markets. What's more, global returns can be volatile across individual countries, given currency, security, political, and geopolitical risks. Indeed, U.S. stocks (ETF SPY) have outperformed EAFE (ETF EFA) over the past year as well as over the past five years. Even so, we recommend that growth investors have approximately 5%-10% of their equity allocations in international stocks to take advantage of the value, and we have been adding global stocks to our Universe of Coverage. There Is a Safety Valve for Private Home Insurance in California A segment of the property-insurance market has shifted away from standard policies toward more bespoke offerings from insurers. Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term The stock market had another tough week, as all the major indices closed Friday at both daily and weekly lows. So far, the price damage generally has been minimal, with the S&P 500 (SPX) down 4.3% from its December 6 closing high, the Nasdaq off 5% from its December 16 high, the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) 5.6% below its December 16 high, the S&P MidCap 400 dropping 8.5% since its November 25 high, and the S&P SmallCap 600 (again seeing the worst of the pullback) declining 10.5% from its November 25 closing high. The SPX closed at important intermediate-term support from its 21-week exponential moving average (EMA), which sits at 5,816. The index has not closed below its 21-week EMA since October 2023, and that lasted only two weeks. The weekly Parabolic SAR (a time- and price-based system) turned bearish a few weeks ago for the first time since the last pullback, which started in July 2024. The SPX has seen a slight break of its weekly middle Bollinger Band, as the lower band is down in the 5,500 area. The cumulative number of new NYSE highs minus new lows has rolled over and is not far from breaking its 50-day average, a reliable sell signal. Breadth continues to fall into uncomfortable territory, as 51% of SPX stocks are above their 200-day average, not far from the 45% danger zone. For the S&P 100, the reading is above 56%, while the Nasdaq 100 is at 55%. The weekly NYSE-Hayes High-Low Signal is warning of more downside. With Friday's SPX close below 5,869, we could see a very important test of the last major breakout level near 5,650. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
