There's no shortage of moving companies to choose from in Tampa, Fla., but you don't want to just go with the first one you find. Selecting the right mover, however, can be tough with so many factors to consider. Weighing prices and reputations among dozens of options gets complicated quickly, but we sought to take on much of the work for you.

We dug through and considered thousands of reviews for moving companies in the Tampa area and used a custom Yahoo Local algorithm to rank them objectively. We then shortened the list to the top five using our weighted scoring criteria, which include Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation, licensing, and various rating sources and factors. After narrowing the list down to the top five Tampa movers, we spoke to each company to obtain accurate pricing, hourly minimums and everything else you need to know to make an informed choice.

We have decades of experience providing trustworthy information on local businesses at Yahoo. And we put in the work to show you why you should trust us instead of just telling you. Our proprietary rankings system, for example, incorporates reviews from multiple established sources of user ratings and weights them to deliver what we believe is the most authoritative local business ranking system. A B&T; Moving Company crew member walks on a ramp towards a company truck (B&T Moving Company)

B&T Moving Company is a relatively young company, getting its start in 2018. However, it earned an excellent reputation during its six years in business, racking up hundreds of reviews with perfect scores across Google, Yelp and Angi. That reputation helped motivate us to name B&T the best overall mover in the Tampa area for local and statewide moves.

The company focuses on the basics, with a suite of services that don't stray far from residential and commercial moving. Beyond standard moving services, B&T has expertise with senior moves for elderly people who may be downsizing or moving into an assisted living facility. (Read our complete guide to the ins and outs of moving seniors for details on logistics.) It also has experience moving specialty belongings like art and pianos.

Not only is B&T Moving Company the top-rated mover in the area, but it also has the cheapest rates of those on our list. The company quoted us $180 per hour for a team of three movers with a two-hour minimum. You can expect to pay at least $360 in labor with the minimum for each job, though many moves will take longer.

This moving company was amazing. The price was affordable for me and the guys were super helpful and sufficient. They communicated with me from start to finish. Moved my items with care and asked questions yo make sure I was ok with where I wanted things placed. It was a lot of work but Jay and the guys handled it like a pro. I live on the second floor with no elevator but these guys got everything accomplished in the time I needed them too. I highly recommend this company and will definitely use them again. - Christy Smith, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

In addition to the base labor rate, B&T Moving Company quoted us a truck fee of $145, which covers the cost of getting the truck to and from your move and any materials involved. The only other charge is a $50 deposit that B&T requires to lock in your move date. The deposit is refundable, however, as long as you cancel with at least 24 hours of notice.

B&T Moving Company offers packing services at its hourly labor rate without any extra charges. If you require packing, the total cost is determined by the number of movers involved. The company also sells packing supplies if you're doing all or some of the packing yourself versus paying the pros to handle it.

B&T Moving Company is fully licensed to move anywhere within Florida. Unfortunately, it isn't licensed by USDOT to move household goods between states. If you have an interstate move, you can still hire the company to load your own rental truck, however.

B&T Moving Company is BBB accredited with an A+ rating and no registered complaints. The company background checks all of its movers. You can call 813-616-3232 or visit its website to book your move.

Let's Get Moving is based in St. Petersburg, Fla., and first opened its doors in 2004. With 20 years in business, it's one of the longest-running movers on this list and built a solid reputation for itself as a great mover in the Tampa area. The family-owned company has nearly perfect scores on Google, Yelp and Angi across more than 800 reviews, and it won Angi's "Super Service" award multiple times.

You can hire Let's Get Moving for many services, but its roots are in local and long-distance residential and commercial moving. While it operates in the Tampa area, it can cover moves all over Florida. It also offers interstate moving along the U.S. East Coast, with typical move times taking anywhere from two to four days.

Pricing for Let's Get Moving falls in the middle of the range among companies on our list. The company quoted us $210 per hour for a team of three movers with a three-hour minimum for each job. The minimum, which is a little higher than other companies on this list, means you'll pay at least $630 in labor costs.

This was our second time using Let's Get Moving and it was just as great. Our last move with them took quite a long time because of what we chose and where we were moving. So this time we upped the service to 3 guys and we estimated the work to be about 5.5 hours. These guys were ON IT! They finished in 4 hrs and 45 minutes!! Josh R, Jason, and Otis were super fast, careful, and friendly. We are two ladies so feeling safe is very important to us and not once did we feel uncomfortable. We will continue using this company every time we move in the area. On top of the great service in person, Paul, the manager, is quick and easy to communicate with when booking. - Delaney Anderson-Dunlop, Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Beyond the standard labor rate, Let's Get Moving quoted us a $265 service charge to cover the cost of the truck, materials used, fuel and the time it takes to get the crew to and from your move. The service charge is higher than other companies on this list, but Let's Get Moving doesn't require a deposit to secure your moving date.

Let's Get Moving offers standard packing services and each move comes with five free wardrobe boxes on your move day (though you may want to buy your own if you desire the best wardrobe boxes for moving). Additionally, you can hire the company for labor-only jobs if you need them to load your rental truck or portable moving containers. The company also has expertise in moving antiques and other specialty items that may require extra care.

While Let's Get Moving is licensed to provide moving services across state lines, the company says it only services East Coast states. If your move is headed west, you'll have to go with another mover.

A fleet of Short Moves trucks sit parked outside of the company office
A fleet of Short Moves trucks sit parked outside of the company office (Short Moves)

Short Moves is the oldest mover on this list, opening for business in 1990 when founder George Burns owned only a single truck. Now, the company operates a fleet of moving trucks while staying true to the personal touch that you get from a local, family-owned business. That approach earned this top Tampa moving company excellent review scores across Google, Yelp and Angi.

Short Moves' focus is on local residential moving services. The unique thing about the company, though, is that it also operates a consignment store to help people deal with the furniture, art and other household items they want to get rid of while decluttering or downsizing during a move. During your move, Short Moves will take items you no longer want to its consignment store to list and sell them for you.

Short Moves pricing is the highest among the best Tampa moving companies on our list. It charges $345 per hour for a team of three movers. It only has a one-hour minimum for each job, however, which beats every other company on this list and is low for the moving industry in general.

George the owner gave me an estimate over the phone. They were very knowledgeable and detailed. They're a family owned business. They were accommodating with scheduling. Moe and Carl, the movers were very fast and I couldn't believe how quick they got everything done. From the time they started until the end, it was about 2.5 hours. They even helped me move a treadmill to a consignment shop, which George's wife Sherry runs. I really liked that they used a vertical clothing rack which was very efficient and made everything easier. They facilitated my move and made it easier. They don't have any temps and all the workers have been in the business for a while. - Charles V., Angi Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

In addition to the hourly rate, Short Moves quoted us a $210 travel and insurance charge, which is somewhat high for the area but not the highest among travel and service fees. The company doesn't require a deposit to secure a moving date.

One unique thing about Short Moves (besides its consignment shop) helps explain its higher pricing. As standard practice, the company pays to repair anything it damages, and if it can't be repaired it offers current market-value reimbursement for the item. That's in contrast to the base coverage that moving companies are required to offer in Florida of $0.60 per pound per item. Moving insurance in general is somewhat ... confusing. But you can read our guide to everything you need to know about moving insurance for pointers.

Unfortunately, Short Moves isn't licensed with USDOT to provide interstate moving, though it will take you anywhere within Florida's borders. Short Moves background checks all of its movers. You can call 813-978-1986 or visit its website to book your move.

You can spend hours preparing for a move, but the process of sorting through reviews and calling companies for quotes is a hassle. We worked to create a list of Tampa mover recommendations we stand behind, but there isn't one perfect choice that works for everyone. When you're trying to decide on a moving company, there are two top factors it helps to prioritize: budget and availability.

The best overall moving company in Tampa is B&T Moving Company. Though it only got its start in 2018, it quickly made a name for itself, earning excellent reviews across the board. It has reasonable rates for the area at $180 per hour for three movers, and the only added fee is a $145 truck charge. In fact, B&T is not only the best moving company in Tampa, it's the most affordable mover on our list. It's also BBB accredited with an A+ rating, so you can rest assured it's a reputable mover. The company charges a $50 deposit, but it's refundable with 48 hours of notice, and it's worth it to lock in a date with the best mover in the area. The only downside is B&T isn't licensed for interstate moves, though it can handle moves to anywhere in Florida.

Budget is likely your most important factor when considering a mover because it sets the upper limit on your choices. Consider each company's rates and any additional fees carefully when weighing them against one another. If budget is your main concern, again, B&T Moving Company offers the best value among moving companies on our Tampa list.

Finally, availability should be a concern, especially if you're booking during a busy season. Moving companies are most often busiest at the beginning and end of each month and on weekends. If you're able to be flexible with your moving date, you stand the best chance of getting your preferred company. If you have a last-minute or emergency move, Florida Boys Moving & Storage is the best Tampa mover for you.

There are several pieces of information about your move that are helpful to have ready when you're calling moving companies for quotes. Any company you speak with will require the addresses and zip codes for each end of your move to determine travel fees. Basic facts about each home, including the number of bedrooms and square footage, are helpful as well.

Before calling to obtain quotes, make a list of your large furniture items, such as dressers and beds, as well. Some companies require a full inventory list to give an accurate estimate. They also use this information to determine the size of the moving crew and how many trucks your move requires.

If you have any specialty items, like a piano or pool table, note those as well. These items typically require an additional charge and special handling.

Moving in Florida means dealing with heat and humidity, so it's best to pack and store your belongings with this in mind. Keep your boxes in a cool, dry place at all times and opt to use climate-controlled storage versus simple temperature-controlled storage for delicate items.

If your move involves a condo or apartment building, you may be required to reserve an elevator to use for moving your stuff. Check with your building manager to see if this is required or if there is a dedicated freight elevator for moving tenants. Coordinate reservation times with your moving company to avoid any issues.

As an individual, you don't require any special licenses or permits to move in Florida. However, your moving company must be licensed with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and follow its regulations. Read our complete guide to moving licenses in permits in Florida for more. Each mover on our list meets the necessary requirements.

Tipping is never required with moving companies, but you can do it as a way to show thanks to your moving team if they do a great job. The usual range for moving company tips is between 10% and 20% of your total move cost. You can tip your team's crew supervisor to have the tip split evenly or opt to tip team members individually.

Read our full guide to tipping movers for more details.
