  • The dollar jumped after the White House said US tariffs will start Saturday as planned, adding to a volatile day that has seen currencies whipsawed by reports on one of President Donald Trump’s signature policies. Washington’s announcement wiped out earlier gains for the Mexican peso and Canadian dollar, which have been repeatedly pushed lower as Trump’s plan for tariffs crystallized. ✍️ via Bloomberg: https://lnkd.in/eMNyT4ki

  • US President Donald Trump is aiming to reshape the country's trade policy using one of his preferred economic tools: tariffs. In the latest Yahoo Finance Chartbook, Yale Budget Lab director of economics Ernie Tedeschi pointed out that, when taken literally, Trump's campaign proposals could increase the average effective tariff rate by anywhere from 7 to 27 percentage points. The high end of the estimate would bring the average effective tariff rate to a level not seen since 1900. "That would represent the most dramatic shift in both trade and tax policy in the US in generations," Tedeschi said. We're chronicling the latest news and updates, from the threats to the eventual policy here: https://yhoo.it/4ghJ4z3

  • "When the Fed lowers rates your bank account interest is going to follow. It's not a direct relationship, but there's kind of a trickle-down effect," explains personal finance editor Molly Moorhead.

  • The latest reading of the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge showed prices increased in line with expectations in December as inflation remained above the Fed's 2% target. The "core" Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, which strips out food and energy costs and is closely watched by the central bank, rose 0.2% from the prior month during December, meeting Wall Street's expectations. The reading was higher than the 0.1% increase seen in November. https://yhoo.it/4jSTmJh

  • Apple reported its fiscal first quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday, beating expectations on the top and bottom lines but falling short on iPhone revenue. Sales out of the company's Greater China region were also lower than Wall Street anticipated in the quarter. The report comes after Jefferies and Loop Capital downgraded Apple’s stock last week on fears of sluggish iPhone sales. Oppenheimer also downgraded shares on Wednesday, citing slower iPhone growth. https://yhoo.it/40FP8Mc
