RatingPrice TargetTechnical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term
After Wednesday's close, Microsoft disappointed and the shares fell over 6%. MSFT has gone nowhere over the past year and has been underperforming the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) since late 2023. Despite that lack of alpha, there are 53 buys on the stock, four holds, and no sells. The market cheered Meta's results and the shares rose 1.6% to an all-time high, although price finished well below its intraday highs. META has a strong technical backdrop and has been a relative strength leader versus the QQQ since its low toward the end of 2022. TSLA was up almost 3% after the company reported, but also finished off its intraday highs. The stock mostly has tracked the QQQ over the past four years. IBM jumped 13% to an all-time high -- and this isn't your father's IBM. NOW was slammed, off 11%, but the stock has been on quite a tear over the past two years. The S&P 500 has almost filled the gap from Monday, with the top of the gap is at 6,089. A close back over 6,120 could open the door for additional gains in the current uptrend, which started on January 13. A loss of Monday's lows at 5,963 could set up a test of the mid-January lows between 5,773 and 5,827. The QQQ is struggling a bit, and is not far from a five-day/13-day exponential moving average (EMA) crossover sell signal. In choppy markets, these short-term crossovers have a tough time. The bottom of the QQQ price gap is at 528 and the ETF would need a break above the December 16 high of 537 to initiate the next leg higher. A break below Monday's lows at 510 could set up a test of the mid-January intraday and closing lows between 500 and 505. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
