  • Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term

On Friday, the S&P 500 filled the gap from last Monday -- but then reversed, closing lower on the week. A close over 6,120 could reopen the door for the uptrend that started January 13. A loss of last Monday's lows at 5,963 could set up a test of the lows near 5,800. So far, the SPX has back-tested the top of its bearish channel near 5,960 and has held its 50-day average at 5,969. The five-day/13-day exponential moving average (EMA) crossover is still bullish, while the 21-day rate-of-change (ROC) is positive. So far, there has been little technical damage, just some panic and fear (especially in the AI world). The QQQ is struggling a bit and is not far from a five-day/13-day EMA crossover sell signal. In choppy markets, these short-term crossovers have a tough time as they don't work very well with this type of price action. The QQQ also filled the gap on Friday and also then reversed lower. The ETF needs to break over the December 16 close of 537 to initiate a leg higher. A break below last Monday's lows at 510 could set up a test of the mid-January lows between 500 and 505. The 21-day ROC is back in positive territory, but the daily moving-average convergence/divergence (MACD) indicator is not far from throwing off a sell signal. With recent strong breadth, the potential for a weakening dollar, interest rates that have calmed, and what likely will be another positive EPS season, it's hard to envision that the current bull is peaking. The end of many bull markets tends to feature a few warnings (7% to 10% pullbacks) before the "top." We haven't seen a whole lot as far as pullbacks and corrections are concerned since July to August 2023, and before that in 2022. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
