Tariff chaos could push Mexico into technical recession
Mexico's economy appears on track to contract in the first quarter, entering a technical recession, according to analysts, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs wreak havoc on growth that was already weakening. “The damage is already done, maybe there's a slight recovery in the second quarter, but this quarter is lost,” said Marco Oviedo, senior strategist for Latin America at XP Investments. During the final months of 2024, Mexico had its first quarterly GDP slump since the pandemic.
