Jaedyn Shaw scored in her debut for Gotham FC in a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Wave on Friday night in the National Women's Soccer League. Shaw was acquired earlier in the week from the North Carolina Courage for $1.25 million in intraleague transfer funds, an NWSL record. Shaw, who started her career with the Wave as a 17-year-old in 2022, came in as a substitute in the second half and was greeted with warm applause from the fans at Snapdragon Stadium.

By Charlotte Harpur, Melanie Anzidei and Tamerra Griffin Twenty-one days ago, Alyssa Thompson scored a critical match-winner against the reigning National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) champions, the Orlando Pride, breaking an eight-match winless drought for Angel City FC. She powered the ball past Brazilian forward Marta with her left arm wrapped in a thick cast, making the feat all the more impressive. Midfielder Jaedyn Shaw has been traded from the North Carolina Courage to Gotham FC for a National Women's Soccer League-record $1.25 million in intraleague transfer funds. The previous record was the $600,000 that the Utah Royals received from the Kansas City Current for Ally Sentnor last month. Gotham said Thursday that the team is working toward an “updated and extended contract” with Shaw.

Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said the big-bucks transaction “shows the ambition” of an ownership that “want[s] to stay at the forefront” of a changing women’s soccer market.

A record fee has been paid for a transfer between two NWSL clubs, after Gotham FC completed the signing of the United States midfielder Jaedyn Shaw from North Carolina Courage for $1.25m. Shaw’s move is not quite an NWSL record, falling just short of Orlando Pride’s $1.5m acquisition of Lizbeth Jacqueline Ovalle from the Mexican club Tigres in August, but it is a record for an intraleague player move in NWSL, and thus immediately becomes one of the most significant transfers in the sport’s history. “I’m so excited to be a part of this incredible club and community,” Shaw said of joining Gotham, who were the first winners of the Concacaf W Champions Cup in May. “I’m looking forward to playing alongside world-class players and giving my all to help the team win another championship.”

The women’s soccer ecosystem barely had time to process Alyssa Thompson’s move to Chelsea when NY/NJ Gotham FC stole the spotlight, dropping a record $1.25 million to land Jaedyn Shaw from the North Carolina Courage, an intra-league deal that resets the NWSL market. “Our motto at Gotham is always building, never finished,” Gotham FC general manager Yael Averbuch West told The Athletic’s “Full Time” podcast this week when asked about the transfer to an already star-studded roster her team has bui
