Top Durham roofers
The best roofing company in Durham for YOU
With so many options to choose from, picking one roofing company is a challenge. A good starting point is considering your timeline, budget and priorities. If you need an urgent repair, a company offering emergency services is likely the best option. If you have more time to compare options and consider different materials and warranties, get estimates from multiple companies to help you decide which is the best fit.
Our top pick for roofers in Durham is Artisan Quality Roofing. It offers a 15-year workmanship warranty, which is significantly more than others in this guide that offer two to 10 years. The company is family-owned and operated, with 15 years of experience in the Durham area. If you want a company with even more experience, Legacy Construction & Roofing is our top alternative. It has been in business for over 40 years and has installed more than 10,000 roofs.

Artisan Quality Roofing is the best overall Durham roofing company
Artisan Quality Roofing was founded in 2011 by Abel and Jessica Figueroa. Abel started his career in custom home building but decided to pursue roofing after discovering his passion for customer service. The company specializes in commercial and residential roofing and gutter services in Durham and the surrounding community.
Every project starts with an in-person roof inspection. Artisan uses a mix of on-site evaluations, satellite imagery and drone technology to get a full picture of the roof before sharing pricing. A deposit is required to schedule work and secure materials. Roof replacements require a $1,000 deposit, while repairs require a 20% deposit up to $500. Final payment is due after the job and final inspection are complete.
Payment options include bank transfer, cash, check or credit card. A 3.75% fee applies to credit card payments over $3,000. Financing is available for projects or repairs of $5,000 or more, including a 36-month option at 8.99% interest or a six-month option at 0% interest with a 3.75% financing fee.

After the replacement or repairs are complete, the team does a magnet sweep to catch any loose nails or debris. If rain or bad weather is expected, the team will reschedule the project to the next available day. The company explained that most reroofing projects are finished in one day, while large roof or multi-building projects can take more than one day.
In addition to roofing, Artisan offers gutter, window and door services for homeowners planning larger exterior updates. It also helps homeowners navigate insurance claims when storm damage is involved. Each replacement project comes with a 15-year workmanship warranty plus up to 50 years of manufacturer coverage.
The roofer is accredited by the BBB and holds an A+ rating with no complaints on file. It also earns strong customer feedback online, with a five-star rating on Google (377 reviews) and Angi (119 reviews). It also has a 4.8-star rating on Yelp (44 reviews). This was an incredible experience. Artisan communicated beautifully and were crystal clear with their pricing and timelines. When the day came their crew was amazing. They were hard at work by 7am and fully completed the job by 4pm. This wasn't a small job as our house has a LOT of roof. Including extras like replacing skylights and repairing damaged wood. The roof looks amazing and the crew worked just as hard on clean up as they did on the roof replacement.
Why they stand out
Pros
- 15-year workmanship warranty
- 15+ years of experience
- Variety of service offerings
- In-house crew with background checks
Cons
- Deposit required
Legacy Construction & Roofing is our top alternative Durham roofer
Legacy Construction & Roofing started in 1983 and has since installed over 10,000 roofs in the Triangle area. It’s based in Cary, but also serves Durham and the surrounding communities with roofing and home exterior services.
Getting an estimate requires an on-site visit from a project manager who evaluates your roof, takes photos and reviews the scope of work. Instead of providing a ballpark price, the estimate is shared after a completed inspection. If it’s a good fit, you can schedule your reroofing date without owing a deposit.
You can pay by check or credit card when the job is complete. There’s no added fee if you pay by card. Financing options are available, and the project manager will walk you through available plans to help determine the best option for the project. Cleanup is included in the estimate, and your project manager will share details of the cleanup process with you. If bad weather is expected, the team monitors conditions closely and reschedules the job for the next available day.

Legacy Roofing has an A+ BBB rating, accreditation and no complaints listed on the site. It holds strong customer ratings with a 4.9 on Google (399 reviews), 4.7 on Yelp (23 reviews) and a 2.8 on Angi (12 reviews). My family’s experience with Legacy Roofing was an outstanding one. Our homes roof was damaged due to a hail storm and we were already set with another company to do the repairs. Thank goodness I answered the door a couple days later to an awesome employee named Aiden who walked me through the whole process. I learned that Legacy had a more premium shingle for the same money and essentially, you let them handle everything. The process was seamless and everything that was promised was provided. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to friends and family!
Why they stand out
Legacy Construction & Roofing is a solid pick if you prefer a roofer with over four decades of experience serving Durham and the Triangle. It is one of three roofers in North Carolina that is a CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, according to its website. However, its workmanship warranty only lasts two years, which is shorter than some other roofers in this guide.
Pros
- No deposit required
- No credit card fee
- 40+ years of experience
- Insurance claim support
Cons
- Subcontracted roofing crews
Erie Home is the best national roofing company serving Durham
Yahoo Local is here to help people make thoughtful, informed choices. While working with a local business can be appealing, there are times when a national roofing company is the better option based on your needs. If you’re weighing the pros and cons, our guide compares local roofers with national providers. For homeowners looking to go with a larger company, Erie Home is our top national recommendation for the Durham area.
Erie Home has been operating since 1976 and has grown into one of the largest residential roofing companies serving the Central U.S. and beyond. It offers essential roofing services like asphalt shingle installation, repair and replacement, along with specialty options such as metal roofing and waterproofing. With more than 100 offices across 38 states, Erie has a broad footprint. While most of its service area is concentrated in the Central and Eastern regions, it’s also a leading national roofer in the Southeast and Pacific Northwest, with offices extending from Washington state to Florida.
Based in Toledo, Ohio, Erie Home holds an average Google rating of 4.4 stars from more than 1,400 reviews, earning recognition for strong overall service among large roofing providers. Its Yelp rating is lower at 2.1 stars from about 40 reviews, which is fairly common for national contractors.
Like most large roofing companies, Erie Home does not offer pricing information over the phone. A company representative explained that pricing varies based on the specifics of each job, which is why all estimates — even rough ones — require an in-person consultation.
Homeowners who choose Erie Home may be eligible for its zero-down financing option, allowing payments to be deferred for 90 days. According to Erie representatives, financing is the most common payment method among customers, with additional details available on the company’s website. Other payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards or checks, may be accepted depending on the local office, and processing fees may apply.
Services offered
Nationwide roofing services
Roof repair, replacement, and installation
Metal and asphalt roofing options
Foundation repair and waterproofing (in select locations)
Free consultations
Erie Home is known for its durable metal roofing systems, but also provides affordable asphalt shingle options in a range of colors, including granite black and Monaco red. Every roofing project includes a limited lifetime labor warranty, along with manufacturer warranties that vary by material. Erie also maintains dedicated repair teams that can respond quickly when needed, and most roof installations are completed in less than a day.
Because Erie operates so many different offices and crews, cleanup procedures are not standardized. During your consultation, ask your estimator how cleanup will be handled throughout and after your roofing project.
Erie Home is accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating and has received approximately 392 customer complaints over the past three years. While that number may seem high, it’s actually lower than the average for national roofing companies. According to the representative we spoke with, Erie works exclusively with in-house crews rather than subcontractors, though we were unable to confirm whether formal background checks are conducted.
To learn more, call 919-351-8028 or request a free estimate online. The nearest office is located at 214 Garner Business Ct., Garner, N.C., 27529. The customer service line is available 24/7, and office hours vary by location.
Customer testimonial
Just a note to tell all about our great experience with Erie Home roofing about a year ago. We are in Harvard, MA and our roof replacement was not an easy job, involving a large architect designed contemporary house with mostly ultra steep roofs as well as a large number of skylights. Erie did a super job and was quick to resolve a couple of minor leaks. They had a large crew so it was complete in only two days. We couldn't be happier with the job. - Tommy H., Google reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

North Carolina roofing FAQs
How much does the average roof replacement cost in North Carolina?
According to our top roofer in Durham, Artisan Quality Roofing, the cost of an asphalt shingle roof replacement ranges from $5,000 to $12,000. However, the total cost depends on your roof size, pitch and complexity. Other materials such as clay, metal, slate and wood shakes are more expensive and can cost from $15,000 to over $32,000. Learn more in our guide to roof replacement costs.
How do I know if my roof needs repairs or a full replacement?
You can usually tell whether your roof needs repairs or a full replacement by assessing the extent of the damage and the roof's age. Issues like a few missing shingles, loose flashing or minor leaks can typically be fixed with repairs. Larger problems, such as repeated leaks, widespread shingle damage, sagging areas or water stains inside the home, might mean a full replacement is the better option.
Roofwerks, one of our top roofers, recommends scheduling a professional inspection if you see cracked or warped shingles, heavy shingle granules in gutters or signs of water damage inside. An inspection can help determine whether a repair will hold or if replacement makes more sense. Learn more in our guide comparing repairs and replacements.
Are there roofing regulations or permits required in North Carolina?
Roofers in North Carolina are regulated at the state and local level, but permit rules can vary by location. Whether you need a permit depends on the type of work being done and the overall project cost. Projects that involve structural changes, including replacing decking, rafters or other framing, likely require a building permit.
Local city or county building departments can set additional requirements, so it’s a good idea to confirm the rules before work begins. Most reputable roofing companies will handle the permitting process for you. If you want a deeper breakdown, review our guide to North Carolina roofing licensing and regulations.
How long does a roof typically last in North Carolina?
According to our top roofer, Artisan Quality Roofing, asphalt shingle roofs are the most common and usually last 15 to 20 years for basic three-tab shingles or 20 to 30 years for architectural shingles.
Metal roofs last 30 to 50 years when properly installed. Clay tile, concrete tile and slate roofs can last 50 years or longer with regular care. Heat, humidity and severe storms can shorten a roof’s lifespan if issues are not taken care of early. How long your roof lasts depends on the material used and how well it is maintained. A professional inspection can help you understand how much life your roof has left and when replacement may be needed. Read more about roof lifespans in this guide.
What is the best time of year to replace a roof in North Carolina?
Spring and fall offer the best weather for roof replacement projects. Spring can bring some rain, but temperatures are usually milder than summer heat. These seasons also allow roofing materials to seal properly while keeping working conditions safer and more comfortable for crews.
