The biggest winter layering mistake people make — and what to do instead
Before you bundle up, follow this expert advice about staying warm during frigid weather.
I'm perpetually cold, so it should be no surprise that my closet consists of lots of warm, cozy styles. I've got coats galore, more sweaters than I know what to do with and loads of long-sleeve tees and turtlenecks to layer underneath. Given my fully stocked wardrobe, I'm normally able to make it through winter without too much grumbling. But here in NYC, we've had a crazy, long stretch of below-freezing weather, and I'm really feeling the chill. And apparently, it's getting even colder this weekend. I need help!
Relocating to Florida or California isn't in the cards at the moment, so I started asking around to see whether I was doing something wrong when getting dressed every morning. Turns out, I've been making one of the biggest layering mistakes out there: wearing cotton as my base layer.
"The most effective way to stay warm in serious cold weather is layering and avoiding cotton fabrics," explains Galen Racette, a store sales specialist at REI in Conshohocken, Pa. "Cotton fabrics are really good at absorbing and holding moisture, which we want to avoid. As an alternative, you can go with wool for a natural fiber or polyester for a synthetic fiber. These are able to wick the moisture from sweat away from you to keep you dry and warm."
Chicago-based wardrobe stylist Hailey Tessem agrees. "Materials are very important. Natural fibers like wool will keep you warm and dry, which is why they should be your first layer. For example, if you start to sweat and your first layer isn't water-wicking, the sweat won't move away from your body, in turn making you colder as long as your skin stays wet," she explains.
Another important tip? Choose items that look good on their own, because you'll probably shed layers when you go indoors. "You need pieces you can easily add or remove as you transition between temperatures," says JenniLee, a NYC-based stylist with over 20 years of experience and the founder of Style Club. "This is especially important for professionals who need to maintain polish at 20°F, but also sit in overheated conference rooms."
Both Tessem and JenniLee suggest starting with a thin merino wool style as your base layer because it's moisture-wicking. From there, add a warm cashmere sweater or wool blazer, then finish your look with a quality coat that shields you from the elements. "Three layers is a good rule of thumb," Tessem notes.
And now that you know merino wool is the way to go in winter, follow my lead and stock up on these essentials to survive the rest of winter.
