The flare legging trend took a minute to win me over, but somewhere between my regular workouts and the very real need to look put-together while basically living in athleisure, the silhouette finally clicked—and has held on. They feel more forgiving than traditional tights, and the subtle kick at the hem creates a surprisingly sleek, leg-lengthening effect.

I reach for them constantly now, especially for weight-lifting sessions, everyday outings and quiet days at home. I'm not alone: the modern flare has been quietly climbing in rankings. "Whether you call them yoga pants or flare leggings, wider-legged leggings are making a major comeback, echoing the way wide-leg jeans have replaced skinny jeans as today's popular pick," says Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich.

As shopping editors, we keep close tabs on emerging trends and put a lot of leggings through their paces, from compressive workout leggings to viral butt-lifting favorites. To find the best flare leggings, I spoke with stylists and fitness experts about how flared leggings differ from traditional workout tights and when they actually perform best. Ahead, the pairs that earned permanent spots in our experts' rotation — and why they might in yours, too.

Material: 81% polyamide, 19% lycra | Size: XXS-XL | Inseam: 29", 30.5", 32", 33.5" | Rise: High | Colors: Varies, depending on size

Why we love it: These leggings feel weightless and move with you so they feel barely-there in a good way. The gentle compression smooths just enough to flatter your figure without digging in and the high-rise waistband keeps everything secure whether you’re doing Pilates, running errands or just lounging at home. Fully opaque — even in the lightest shades — they give you confidence in any pose or activity. Plus, at $38 a pair, they offer the kind of quality and comfort usually reserved for brands that cost three times as much.

What experts say: Shopping editor Ellie Conley, a longtime CRZ Yoga fan, says: “I have about eight pairs of the standard version of these leggings, so I got the flare ones, and they're just as comfortable.” She’s a self-proclaimed legging obsessive who wears them almost every day, and compares them to higher-end favorites like Athleta’s Transcend and Lululemon’s Align leggings. The compression is "gentle — as in, not so powerful that I have lines from the seams on my skin when I take off these leggings (if you know, you know)" and "they're high-waisted, so they hold my tummy in and don't slip down as I walk, run or do any other type of workout."

Keep in mind: These leggings run a little big and can stretch out with wear, so Conley recommends sizing down. Color options are also more vast or limited depending on your size.

Pros
  • Super soft fabric
  • High, flattering waistband
  • Come in multiple inseams
  • Squat-proof
Cons
  • Run large
  • Color options vary by size

Material: 79% nylon, 21% spandex | Size: XS-4X | Inseam: 29.5" (petite), 31.5" (regular), 34.5" (tall) | Rise: Extra-high | Colors: 4 options

Why we love it: These Old Navy flare leggings are the perfect combination of comfort, durability and everyday style without the high price tag. The fabric is smooth, lightly compressive and sweat-wicking, making them great for lounging, running errands or low-impact workouts. The extra-high waist sits just above the belly button for flattering coverage, while the fitted hip and thigh give the flare a sleek, elongating look. And with inseam options for regular, petite and tall heights, they’re accessible for almost every body type.

What experts say: “These Old Navy flare leggings are in regular rotation for me," says shopping editor Katelyn Mullen, a mom of three who works from home. "They're comfortable enough to throw on for casual days, but still look polished enough to wear out and about. I’ve had this pair for three years and after countless washes they’re still holding up great, which makes them one of the most reliable pieces in my closet.”

Keep in mind: While these leggings are available in a wide range of sizes and heights, colors are limited and they tend to sell out quickly. If you see your size, it’s worth snagging a pair sooner rather than later — especially if they're on sale.

Pros
  • Very durable
  • Flattering, extra-high waistband
  • Sweat-wicking
Cons
  • Sell out quickly
  • Colors are limited

Material: 77% polyester, 23% spandex | Size: XXS-3X | Inseam: 29" (petite), 31" (regular), 34" (tall) | Rise: High | Colors: 7 options

Why we love it: If you want flare leggings that actually smooth and sculpt, this pair delivers. The slightly thicker, ultra-soft fabric adds noticeable structure without feeling bulky, giving the legs and waist a more held-in look than most lounge-forward flares. The crisscross waistband enhances the hourglass effect, while the rich, vibrant color options make them feel a bit more special than your standard black pair.

What experts say: These leggings have a beautiful shape that's really elongating. They look great with fitted tops, as well as looser tees and sweatshirts, though they do skew a little more athletic. Though I've only had this flare style for a little over a month, I've had other pieces from Popflex (leggings included) for more than a year, and I've been impressed by how well they have held up over time. The colors are vibrant and don’t fade easily, and they don't seem to shrink in the wash.

Keep in mind: These come in petite, regular and tall inseams and sizes up to 3X, which helps make the fit more accessible, but the lengths do run slightly long. If you’re between inseams, you may find (as I did) that opting for the taller option works best with chunkier sneakers or platform shoes to keep the hem from dragging.

Pros
  • Compressive, sculpting fabric
  • Come in three inseam options
  • Vibrant colors
Cons
  • Runs slightly long

Material: Not listed | Size: XS-XXL | Inseam: 28", 30", 32", 34" | Rise: High | Colors: 31 options

Why we love it: These flares deliver a flattering, sculpted fit without feeling restrictive, thanks to a silky nylon-spandex blend that's ultra-soft and stretchy. The crossover waistband and subtle V-seam enhance the waistline, and the flared leg lends a sleek, elongating silhouette that works for both low-impact workouts and everyday wear. You can't beat the $29 price tag, either.

What experts say: Our editors love how the fit accentuates curves while keeping everything smooth and secure — and reviewers agree. "These are my favorite pants," said one reviewer. "I have them in multiple colors and I plan on getting more. Very stretchy and very flattering. I am 5 feet, 8 inches, 195 pounds and have ordered XL ... Good quality, thick yet breathable fabric."

Keep in mind: Petite shoppers should be mindful of inseam length, since these leggings can run long. They also don’t come with pockets, which is worth noting if you like stashing your phone or keys while out walking.

Pros
  • Come in a wide range of colors
  • Available in four inseams
  • Flattering design details, like crossover waist and V-seam
Cons
  • No pockets
  • Some shoppers say they run long

Material: 95% cotton, 5% spandex | Size: M-6X | Inseam: 31" | Rise: High | Colors: 9 options

Why we love it: Made from a premium cotton-blend knit with four-way stretch, this pair is soft and breathable yet offers excellent recovery, so they keep their shape through wear and washing. The high-rise, 2-inch waistband smooths without rolling, while the flared leg gives a flattering, elongating silhouette. Pockets add a practical touch, while multiple inseam options and sizes up to 6X make them one of the most inclusive flare options on the market.

What experts say: “They're opaque, come in multiple colors and patterns, have pockets, are very comfortable and best of all (in my opinion), they come in multiple inseams, including short, which means my 5'2" self isn't always stepping on the bottoms of them like with other regular-length pants," says shopping writer Carrie McCabe.

Keep in mind: While we didn’t find these leggings ran long, some reviewers note that the length can feel slightly generous, so if you’re between sizes, choosing the petite option might be the safest bet.

Pros
  • Comes in a wide range of colors and patterns
  • Sizing up to 6X
  • Wide, smoothing waistband
Cons
  • Some say these run long

Material: 87% recycled polyester, 13% elastane | Size: XXS-XXL | Inseam: 32" | Rise: High | Colors: 3 options

Why we love it: Made from soft, breathable four-way stretch fabric, these leggings hug in all the right places without feeling restrictive, giving the perfect mix of comfort and style. The crossed V-shaped waistband is flattering and supportive without digging, while the high-rise fit creates a super elongating silhouette. Sure, they're pricey, but it's hard to beat that classic Vuori feel — soft, slightly cozy and effortlessly elevated (IYKYK).

What experts say: I've only had this pair for about a month, but have worn them countless times already. They just hug you in a really gentle way that looks flattering, but feels supremely comfortable. They're highly breathable, but because they're thicker, you can still wear them outside in colder weather. I have worn them for light workouts, but because they don't have as much tummy control and support throughout, I find they're better for days when you want to feel cozy yet look polished enough.

Keep in mind: These leggings only come in a 32-inch inseam, so they may be slightly long for petite frames. At 5'7", the hem hits just right when I wear chunkier sneakers.

Pros
  • Cozy, stretchy fabric
  • Super soft four-way stretch
  • Flattering V-shaped high waist
Cons
  • Only one inseam length available

Material: 88% nylon, 12% elastane | Size: XXS-XXL | Inseam: 30" (short), 32" (regular), 34" (long) | Rise: High | Colors: 8 options

Why we love it: Aerie's flares have a crossover waistband that adds a fun, flattering twist on the classic high-rise style while the smooth matte finish keeps the look clean and polished. Designed for low-impact movement, they’re breathable enough for a light sweat but best suited for casual days, travel or lounging around the house. For petite frames, the shorter inseam ensures the flare hits just right without pooling at the feet.

What experts say: “They're not a thick athletic material but more of a light, barely-there, lounge-y fabric that's perfect for wearing on casual days or flights," says shopping editor Hannah Oh. "I love that Aerie offers a short option, because as someone who's 5'3", a flare legging that's pooling around my ankles just doesn't hit the same.” Shopping editor Elizabeth Berry is also a fan. “I have owned multiple pairs of these and have watched them literally sell off the racks at Aerie stores. The cross-over waistband is so flattering and I appreciate the long size option for a full-length inseam. They are also more affordable and come in a range of hues that frequently shift per season.”

Keep in mind: These leggings are designed for low-impact activities rather than high-intensity workouts. The fabric tends to pill a bit more quickly than pricier leggings, says Berry. They also sell out quickly, so if you see your size, it’s worth snagging a pair before they’re gone.

Pros
  • Super soft and comfortable
  • Come in multiple inseams for petite and tall frames
  • Flattering crossover waistband
Cons
  • More prone to pilling
  • Sell out quickly

Material: 75% nylon, 24% lycra | Size: XXS-3X | Inseam: 29.5 (petite); 31.5 (regular), 34.5 (tall) | Rise: Extra-high | Colors: 4 options

Why we love it: If you’re tall and have struggled to find flares that hit just right, these leggings are a game-changer. At 34.5 inches, the tall inseam is among the longest of any styles we evaluated — about half an inch longer than most — making them perfect for long legs. We also appreciate the ultra-high-rise waistband, which provides excellent tummy control, and the multiple inseam options and sizes up to 3X that make this one of the most size-inclusive flare options available.

What experts say: “I just got these, and I’m obsessed," says shopping editor Julia Webb who is nearly 6-feet tall. I also have these and regularly reach for them: The tummy control is noticeably firmer than other flare styles I own from brands like Beyond Yoga, which makes these great for more activity, like if you're taking a long walk or lifting weights in the gym.

Keep in mind: Because of the firmer compression, these leggings are less ideal for lounging and more suited for active days where support and a smooth silhouette matter. And if you're taller than 5'6" or so, I recommend opting for the tall inseam. At 5'7", my pair is just a smidge shorter than I'd like them to be when paired with some of my favorite sneakers.

Pros
  • Longest inseam on our list
  • Great tummy control
  • Available in a wider range of sizes and inseams
Cons
  • Not as comfortable for lounging

Material: 87% polyester, 13% elastane | Size: XXS-3X | Inseam: 31.5" | Rise: High | Colors: 3 options

Why we love it: These bootcut leggings aren’t a full-on flare, but they offer a nice middle ground for anyone wanting to step away from traditional tights without diving straight into a wider-leg style. And despite the high price, editors and fitness experts alike have praised their durability, noting they've gotten years out of their favorite pairs without any noticeable signs of wear.

What experts say: Endurance athlete and triathlon coach Elizabeth Kaplanis calls Beyond Yoga’s fabrics "the Queen Bee of comfort, durability and performance.” She says the leggings are both stretchy and supportive, and the thicker, matte fabric looks super stylish in and outside of yoga class. Plus, the opaque fabric is "truly squat-proof."

Keep in mind: These leggings have a brushed feel, which makes them extra cozy (you'll want to live in them, says Kaplanis), but potentially too warm for hot weather — especially if you're working out. They also only come in one inseam, so petite and taller shoppers should double check before committing.

Pros
  • More subtle bootcut flare
  • Brushed, matte fabric
  • Thick, durable construction
Cons
  • May be too thick for warm weather
  • Only come in one inseam

Material: 85% nylon, 15% elastane | Size: XS-XL | Inseam: 31" | Rise: High | Colors: 2 options

Why we love it: Soft, comfortable and surprisingly functional, these flares hit all the right notes. The high-rise crossover waistband shapes and flatters without digging in, while the deep side pockets are actually useful — a rarity in leggings that look this polished. They strike the perfect balance between workout-ready and everyday-ready, so you can go from errands to light activity without skipping a beat.

What experts say: While I don't have the flared version (yet!), I have the traditional silhouette and the crossover waistline is incredibly flattering. I can wear them with just a sports bra and feel confident, or throw on a looser tee or sweatshirt and still look pulled together. The pockets are highly functional, too, since they're actually deep and sturdy enough to tote something as large as my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Keep in mind: These leggings hold up well to repeated washing and drying, but after about a year, minor pilling can appear in high-friction areas like the behind and inner thighs. And, because they only come in a single 31-inch inseam, taller and shorter shoppers should double check their measurements.

Pros
  • Deep, functional pockets
  • Flattering crossover waistband
  • Soft, buttery fabric
Cons
  • Only comes in one inseam
  • May show some signs of wear after heavy use

How we tested the best flare leggings

Our team combined hands-on testing with expert insight to find the best flare leggings. We consulted stylists and fitness pros — people who understand both what’s trending and what actually performs in and outside of the gym. We also scoured shopper feedback across retailers, Reddit threads and social media to see how these styles hold up on different body types and across a range of activities.

We tapped our editorial team to find out which pairs they actually wear on repeat. Because many of the most popular flared leggings come from brands already known for excellent traditional tights, we paid especially close attention to newer flare versions from editor-loved labels to see whether they delivered the same level of comfort, stretch and durability.

Personally, I work out for about an hour most days, but as a mom of four who works from home, leggings are my go-to well beyond the gym. When evaluating flared styles, I focused on the details that matter most in real life: fit, recovery, opacity and overall comfort.

Since flare leggings often pull double (or triple) duty, style and versatility were just as important as performance. I prioritized pairs I could wear to lift weights, throw on with a jean jacket for school pickup or keep on for a full day of errands without feeling sloppy. The result is a list of flared leggings that actually earn their spot in your weekly rotation.

What to consider when shopping for flare leggings

Material

Fabric matters, especially since flare leggings often pull double duty as both activewear and everyday staples.

  • Cotton blends feel soft and breathable for lounging or low-impact movement, but aren’t as sweat-wicking or quick-drying for higher-intensity activities.

  • Performance fabrics like polyester and nylon tend to hold their shape better over time and offer a bit more durability for movement like yoga, Pilates or walking.

Either way, look for pairs that include elastane or Lycra for stretch. This helps the leggings move with you without bagging in areas like the knees or seat.

Inseam

Getting the length right is especially important with flared silhouettes, says Anouska Shenn, a certified yoga and pilates instructor and founder of The Office Yoga Company. Unlike traditional tights, an inseam that's too short can throw off the proportions and make the flare look stubby rather than leg-lengthening. At the same time, you don’t want excess fabric pooling on the floor, particularly if you plan to wear them for workouts or lots of walking.

"The hem should just touch the top of the shoe or sit right above the heel," says celebrity stylist Kim Appelt. "Too long and you look sloppy; too short and it cuts the line of your leg." Consider the shoes you’ll wear most often (chunky sneakers vs. flat slides can make a real difference) and check whether the brand offers petite, regular and tall options if you're on the shorter or taller side, says Shenn.

Fit and rise

A secure waistband is still key, even for more lounge-forward styles.

  • High-rise options tend to offer the most smoothing and stay-put support, plus offer the most dramatic leg-lengthening effects.

  • Mid-rise pairs can feel more relaxed for all-day wear.

Before buying, check for design details that signal a more stable fit: a wide waistband, reinforced seams and fabric with a higher elastane content. Reviews can also be especially telling here. If multiple shoppers mention rolling or constant adjusting, consider it a red flag. Ideally, the waistband should lie flat without digging or sliding down during wear.

Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of flare leggings is how easily they transition beyond workouts. Look for details that elevate the overall look, like matte fabrics, minimal seams or a clean front panel. The best pairs should work just as well with a sweatshirt and sneakers as they do with a fitted tank or casual jacket.

Just keep in mind: Flare leggings aren't ideal for all types of workouts. “They’re best for yoga, Pilates, walking and lower-impact movements where they don't get in the way,” says Appelt. Avoid choosing them for workouts like HIIT, running or using equipment that may snag.

Best flare leggings FAQs

Can I work out in flare leggings?

It depends on the activity, says Shenn. "The extra fabric can definitely end up being a trip hazard. For any workout that requires being light on your feet — like running, jump rope or playing tennis — it's not the best wardrobe choice," she says. "And if you’re working with moving equipment, like an exercise bike or a Pilates reformer, loose fabric at the legs is not your friend, because it could get caught in the machinery." That said, flares are fun, flattering and versatile for lighter movement, stretching or strength training.

What can I wear with flare leggings?

Flare leggings are all about proportion, says Appelt. “Since the leg widens at the bottom, I suggest balancing that with a more fitted top or a cropped layer that will highlight your waist.” A lightweight cropped sweatshirt, a fitted tank or even a tee tucked at the front can all work. “If your top is oversized, try a half tuck, tie your shirt in a knot or just choose a shorter top, so that you don't look like you're drowning in your look.”

What shoes should I wear with flare leggings?

In the gym, Shenn recommends chunkier, more supportive sneakers when wearing flares, since they help balance the wider hem and keep you stable during workouts. For a street-style or everyday look, Appelt suggests a trendy sneaker or slide. “Flared leggings are more of an athleisure look, so I like to keep to that style,” she says.

What are the best flare leggings for tall people or short people?

"Body type is actually the key to getting this look right," says Appelt.

  • For straighter shapes or a more athletic body type, flares can make you look like you have some curves and add some softness and flow.

  • For pear shapes, they balance fuller hips, because they mirror the hip line.

  • For hourglass body shapes, a high-rise flare that defines the waist is so flattering.

Height also plays a role, she says.

  • If you’re petite, choose a narrower flare and make sure the hem doesn’t puddle on the floor — extra material can make your leg look short.

  • For taller frames, look for leggings with longer inseam options, so the flare hits at the right spot over your shoes — not too high, not dragging on the ground — to keep the leg-lengthening effect.
