  • Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term

On Monday, the stock market shook off the spike in crude oil prices and another war in the Middle East. We have seen this story play out too many times, sometimes ending quickly and other times not so quickly. But based on current futures activity, Monday's reaction is not a given for Tuesday. In keeping with the early trend in 2026, there were big winners and big losers on Monday, the first trading day in March. Crude oil (WTI) hit a high of $75.30/barrel in the early trade and finished at $71.60, up almost 7% on the day (the largest spike since March 2022). Brent oil reached $82.40 early on, but pulled back to $78.50 and closed 7.7% higher (also the largest pop since March 2022). WTI peaked right near its declining 200-week moving average of $75.40. For now, that will be the critical region; if price moves above there, we could then get into the $80 region. Gasoline futures, which were at $2.00/gallon a couple days ago, hit $2.50 on Monday morning but backed off a bit to $2.40 (up over 5%). That is where the American consumer -- as well as the rest of the world -- will feel it. Energy stocks led the 11 S&P 500 sectors, with the XLE ETF adding 2%, led by coal, exploration & production, and pipelines. Industrials added 1%, led by defense, marine transportation, and aerospace. Consumer Staples lost 1.4% while Consumer Discretionary declined 1.2%. Cruise stocks were pummeled, while personal products and specialty finance fell over 4%. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
