  • Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term

Crude oil (WTI) hit a high of $78/barrel on Tuesday and closed at $74.60, up almost 5% and at its highest since January 2025. Brent reached $85, up over 5% at $81.75 and also the highest since early last year. The oil market then settled down on Wednesday, but started ripping higher again on Thursday -- with WTI closing at $79 and Brent at $83.75. The initial spikes on Monday of 7%-8% for WTI and Brent were the largest one-day advances since March 2022. Up until Wednesday, the 200-week moving average was keeping a lid on WTI, with the declining average is currently sitting just above $75. With the action on Thursday, the average has now become support. The next piece of chart resistance, as well as a 38.2% retracement of the decline since early 2022, comes in near $83. After that, the next area of resistance is in the low $90s. History is on the side of calmer days and eventually lower oil prices, maybe much lower. But the one big unknown is how long this situation will last. And that brings us to the heart of the matter: gasoline prices. Gasoline futures were trading just below $2.00/gallon on February 25, and by Thursday, they were at $2.60 (in just six trade days). The 30% surge is the largest six-day move since we were coming out of the pandemic in May 2020. Prior to that, we saw these types of quick moves in 2017, 2016, and then back in early 2009. As we all know, prices at the pump move quickly to the upside but much slower to the downside, so consumers around the world already have started to feel the impact. Once again, how long this all lasts will be of utmost importance for low- to middle-income consumers. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
