Sound familiar? If you’ve accumulated more regret than mileage when it comes to heels, you’re not alone. Some shoes, with their extra-pointy, narrow toes and sloping pinprick stiletto heels, just aren't designed to ever play nice with your feet.

The most comfortable heels of 2026
Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 12 | Heel height: 2.75" | Materials: Leather, synthetic leather
Why we love them: Beloved by our style pros and podiatrists alike, these heels feature a grippy rubber sole for stability and an adjustable ankle strap for a secure, walkable fit. The footbed is also built with cushioning in areas that experience more pressure, like the arch and ball of the foot. Customers rave about not needing any break-in period with these comfy heels.
What experts say: Dr. Dana Canuso, podiatrist and founder of Dr. Canuso Skincare for Feet says Cole Haan is one of her go-to brands for comfortable heels. Commerce Director Jeanine Edwards is also obsessed with this sleek pair. "I've worn these heels for a full eight-hour workday, and at no point was I praying to take them off. I've also worn them to a reception that included lots of dancing, and my feet were comfortable the entire time," she says. She adds that she's worn them with everything from slacks and jeans to dresses and skirts, and the simple yet classic design makes them a great option to wear just about anywhere.
Keep in mind: Edwards notes that they run slightly small — she typically wears an 8.5 but sized up to a 9. It’s worth checking the size chart and/or trying on multiple sizes.
- Targeted cushioning in the footbed
- No break-in period reported
- Great for wearing for long periods, dancing, etc.
- Grippy sole to help with traction
- Can run a little small
Sizes: 5-12 | Widths: Regular, wide | Colors: 18 | Heel height: 3" | Materials: Suede, latex foam
Why we love them: This popular Dream Pairs heel shows that great style and comfort don’t have to come with a high price tag. They're available in multiple colors (from neutrals to bright pinks and glittery options) and have racked up more than 18,700 five-star ratings. It's no wonder they're an Amazon No. 1 bestseller.
What experts say: These chunky-heeled sandals feel stable and comfortable thanks to a wide base and adjustable ankle straps. The heel measures 3 inches, with a lower 2.25-inch version available if you prefer less height. Shoppers rave about the padded footbed and budget-friendliness, with one reviewer calling them “super comfy and great quality for the price… not too tall, very sturdy and easy to clean.”
Keep in mind: Many wearers say they’re comfy straight out of the box, though a few recommend a brief break-in period — so you may want to give them a test run before a long outing.
- Available in two heel heights
- Comes in regular and wide widths
- Under-$35 price point for all styles
- Padded footbed
- May require a break-in period
Sizes: 6-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 2 | Heel height: 3" | Materials: Faux leather
Why we love them: If you're attending any summer weddings or bachelorette parties, this fun, stylish shoe is a great option that won't have you wanting to peel off your heels before hitting the dance floor. They feature extra cushioning under the arch and a wide, square toe. The heel is flared out to distribute pressure and reduce discomfort.
What experts say: "These cute kitten heels are so comfortable," says Hannah Oh, Style Optimization Editor. "There's no pinchy toe area, and they remind me of styles that are $200+ even though they're less than $90. They don't come in a wide size, but I found that they're super accommodating for wide feet due to the open strappy design."
Keep in mind: The toe post may cause some discomfort, since it's a flip-flop style that puts pressure on that area. I haven't found it to be super bothersome, but it's worth noting.
- Cute metal embellishment
- Low, sculptural heel
- Open design accommodates wide feet
- Slide-in style for no heel blistering
- Toe post may cause discomfort
Sizes: 6-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 3 | Heel height: 2.63" | Materials: Faux leather
Why we love them: Wedges are arguably the most comfortable form of high heel since your weight is distributed throughout the entire heel rather than just on a tiny stiletto point. But these Dr. Scholl's wedges are on another level — the curved heel cup, the comfortable arch support, the super-light feel and the thick straps make these an extremely easy-to-wear heel.
What experts say: "It's honestly shocking how comfortable these are right out of the box," says Oh. "You barely feel like you're wearing a heel, even though you get almost three extra inches of height. I'd even go so far as to say they are as comfortable as wearing a pair of flip-flops."
Keep in mind: Since these are a more casual style, they may not be formal enough for an office setting, a wedding, or events with a black-tie dress code. They're also not available in wide, but I found them to run a little wider than your average medium-width shoe.
- Extremely comfortable
- Lightweight despite the wedge heel
- Zero break-in period
- More casual look
- Wide sizes not available
Sizes: 5-12 | Widths: Narrow, medium, wide, extra-wide | Colors: 8 | Heel height: 2.25" | Materials: Leather
Why we love them: Naturalizer is often top of mind when it comes to comfortable shoes — and for good reason. The brand balances on-trend style with built-in, sculpted footbed cushioning and arch support for all of its shoes. Plus, this style comes in multiple colors and patterns (our favorite is the trendy leopard print). They’re available in narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide sizes too.
What experts say: Cassandra Sethi, personal stylist and founder of Next Level Wardrobe, highly recommends these pumps. "It's a classic pointed-toe pump with built-in comfort, and it has a walkable heel height," she says. "Great if you need polish without the pain."
Keep in mind: One reviewer noted that the toe area felt a bit snug, especially for wider feet, so sizing up a half size may help. “I’m usually an 8.5 wide... and while the fit was good, my toes were a bit squished,” they shared.
- Comes in multiple width options
- Sculpted cushioning and arch support in the footbed
- Made of real leather
- Pointed toe style may feel snug
Sizes: 5-13 | Widths: Medium, wide | Colors: 18 | Heel height: 2.5" | Materials: Leather, foam, rubber
Why we love them: This heel from Vionic is so comfortable it practically earned a gold star — OK, not really, but it does carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance, which means it’s been reviewed by podiatrists and recognized for promoting good foot health.
What experts say: "Like all of Vionic's shoes, these heels feature the brand's signature deep heel cup, arch support and cushy footbed that makes your foot feel cradled and supported," says Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich, who loves these 2.5-inch sandal heels. "It's almost jarring how comfortable they are to wear. Even during the first wear, they feel broken-in and even more supportive than many flat shoes I own."
Keep in mind: Vionic shoes tend to run wide. "They're great for people who need a wider shoe or more room for bunions, but those with narrow feet may find them too roomy," says Teich.
- No break-in period, extremely comfortable
- Thick straps won't dig into your feet
- Deep heel cup and arch support
- May not work for narrow feet
Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 5 | Heel height: 3.75" | Materials: Suede, leather
Why we love them: While these heels are nearly 4 inches tall, the 1.25-inch platform helps offset the height, making them surprisingly comfortable and easy to walk in. In fact, Commerce Editors Sarah Weldon and Ellie Conley count them among their all-time favorite heels. And take it from a short girl — these are great for weddings or any other event where you'll be wearing a long dress.
What experts say: “When you first look at these heels, you think, ‘Whoa, these are going to hurt,’” Conley says. “But thanks to the platform, they’re incredibly comfortable. I’ve worn them to multiple weddings and kept them on all night — even on the dance floor.” Weldon agrees, noting that both she and her 63-year-old mom (who rarely wears heels) wore them to a wedding from start to finish. “We stood and danced all night without ever feeling the need to take them off,” she says. The chunky heel, platform base and adjustable ankle strap all work together to provide impressive support.
Keep in mind: Since it leans dressy, this peep-toe heel is best for nights out and special occasions rather than office wear or daytime events.
- Platform increases comfort
- Gives you almost 4 inches of height
- Ideal neutral shoe for weddings or other formal events
- Not great for daytime
Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 1 | Heel height: 1.75" | Materials: Leather, rubber, microsuede
Why we love them: If you normally wear ballet flats or another flat shoe to work but want to experiment with heels, Yana Anders, stylist and owner of Style Fix Studio, recommends this pair, which features a heel just under 2 inches. They're a classic style that will work well with dresses, skirts, slacks or other professional pieces.
What experts say: "This block heel provides a wide base of support, meaning you won’t feel like you’re balancing on a tightrope," Anders says. Sethi agrees: "Its stable block heel and cushioned footbed make this a strong all-day option that still looks sleek and professional."
Keep in mind: There are no wide sizes available, and they're only available in one (albeit classically black) shade.
- Simple, professional style
- Made of real leather
- Wide block heel distributes pressure
- Only one color
Sizes: 5-12 | Widths: Medium, wide | Colors: 4 | Heel height: 1.75" | Materials: Leather
Why we love them: Another Naturalizer pick our experts love, this slingback design features an open back secured with an ankle strap. It adds a little pop of visual interest and style while still being a reliable basic that works with so many different outfits.
What experts say: Anders recommends this Naturalizer heel, saying, "These slingbacks are comfortable because they distribute weight evenly across the foot. The slingback strap also prevents heel slippage that often causes blisters."
Keep in mind: Some reviewers noted that the elastic slingback strap may not fit as well on smaller ankles — a common quirk of slingback styles, which trade ankle security for a sleeker, more streamlined look.
- Comfortable block heel distributes weight
- Sleek cutout and pointed toe
- Slingback straps prevent heel slippage
- Might not fit smaller ankles
How we chose the most comfortable high heels
To determine which heels truly deserve a spot in your footwear wardrobe, we first consulted podiatrists and personal stylists to learn what features make a high heel comfortable. They walked us through how different design elements — from heel shape to toe box width — can impact comfort (or cause discomfort). For example, stylist Yana Anders explained that block heels tend to put less strain on the foot than slimmer heels because they distribute weight more evenly. Our panel of podiatrists and stylists also shared their own go-to brands and specific heels they personally own and love.
We then polled Yahoo editors and shopping experts to find out which heels they consistently reach for — because firsthand wear is hard to beat. Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich and Style Optimization Editor Hannah Oh shared several favorites they've comfortably worn around the office, to weddings, while out and about, etc. And finally, we researched dozens of top-rated, shopper-loved options, digging into reviews and conversations on Reddit, fashion sites and shoe blogs. We finalized our picks only after closely evaluating fit, heel height and thickness, walkability, cushioning, support and overall customer satisfaction.
What to consider when buying comfortable heels
It's not about how expensive the shoe is or how high the heel is (OK, it's not just about how high the heel is). There are certain elements that commonly contribute to heel pain that you can keep an eye out for and avoid while shopping.
Heel height: A lower heel height will be easier to walk in and more comfortable for most people. "Once the heel exceeds a height of 2 inches, it exerts increased pressure on the balls of your feet, resulting in unnecessary stress on your knees and lower back," says Dr. Sooji Kim, a podiatrist at Gotham Footcare.
Heel thickness: "A heel is going to be more comfortable when the surface area of the shoe that hits the ground is larger," Canuso tells us. For that reason, a stiletto heel won't be as comfortable or easy to walk in as a block heel or a wedge since they're "unable to support the pressure placed on your forefoot and will be less comfortable than a pair of platform wedges that can disperse the pressure," she adds.
Support: Heels with built-in arch and ankle support are necessary if you plan on wearing them for long periods of time. "It's crucial to seek out heels equipped with adequate arch support and cushioning to enhance shock absorption and alleviate pressure on the feet," says Kim. You can also look into insole inserts that add more cushioning, especially if you have high arches.
Sole: A thicker sole will go a long way in adding comfort. "A block or platform sole might look chunky and intimidating, but it actually decreases the pitch of the heel by lessening the distance between the heel and ball of your foot," says Teich. Plus, it adds some support: The thinner the sole, the harsher the foot pain, says Canuso.
Cushioning: Finding a high heel with ample cushioning is key to wearing for long periods of time. "The padding and thickness built into the heel and the ball of the shoe (where you typically put a lot of pressure) make a significant difference in a heel's comfort level," Canuso tells us.
Fit: High heels should fit snugly, so they don’t move around while you’re walking but not too tight that they will cause painful blisters. Kim recommends choosing heels with "a wide toe box to allow the toes to move freely and prevent excess squeezing that can eventually lead to bunions and hammer toes." She also suggests choosing options with adjustable straps or laces to provide a more comfortable fit and provide better stability.
Comfy heels FAQs
What actually makes a heel comfortable?
If we had to distill it down to just a few key things that make a heel comfortable: a thicker, lower heel that distributes weight, a wide toe box that doesn't squeeze, a light shoe that isn't heavy while walking, and a well-padded footbed.
What is the ideal heel height for a comfortable heel?
Both Kim and Canuso agree the ideal heel height is around two inches, however that is not necessarily the only heel height that will feel comfortable for you. Canuso explains that if you choose a shoe with a four-inch heel and a two-inch platform, that could be just as comfortable as wearing a two-inch heel, since your foot will still be in the same position.
What types of heels are easiest to walk in?
"For most people, the easiest heels to walk in are going to be a block heel or wedge around two inches in height," says Canuso. "Another important feature that makes shoes easy to walk in is the heel and ankle support. If a heel has significant support behind the foot and around the ankle, say with a strap, it is going to be much easier to walk in," she adds.
Kim agrees, saying, "Chunky heels or wedges provide a broader base of support, enhancing stability and balance while reducing pressure on the ball of the foot." She also suggests looking for "Heels with a lower pitch or a subtle platform that can distribute weight more evenly, reducing strain on the feet. It's important to find a heel style that suits your walking gait and provides a comfortable and secure fit."
Which brand has the most comfortable heels?
“I approach heel comfort a bit differently, as shoe comfort varies widely from person to person, so generalizing the most comfortable heel is tricky,” Alyssa Bitterman, stylist and founder of Styled By Lyss says. "That said, the best path to finding an all-day heel starts with reputable brands known for thoughtful construction. My personal top recommendations include Sam Edelman and Naturalizer." Ultimately, the right heel will be a personal choice. Still, our top picks are a strong starting point — a carefully curated mix of dependable brands and standout styles backed by expert insight, thorough research and real shopper satisfaction.
How can I wear heels all day without pain?
"It helps to break in new heels at home before wearing them for extended periods," Bitterman says. "And always prioritize fit. Heels that are even slightly too tight will cause discomfort much faster." Sethi and Bitterman also recommend sticking to a heel height that you can realistically walk in, typically three inches or under. "Look for cushioned footbeds and a stable heel base like a block," Bitterman says. Sethi also recommends alternating heel heights throughout the week to reduce strain.
Additionally, the way you walk can affect how you're feeling too. "It sounds simple, but many people walk on their toes in heels," Anders says. "Focus on landing on the heel first and rolling forward to push off the ball of your foot." If you're still experiencing pain, Edith Chan, celebrity stylist and image consultant says that adding gel or cushioned inserts under the ball of your foot helps absorb pressure, while heel liners prevent rubbing and blisters at the back of the shoe.
