BBC Dinosaur World

Developer: Asylum Entertainment
Shipped: June 2001. Download.

Dinosaur World was the first product to be released using Q. It was targeted at low end 3D PC's and completed in 2001. Polygon count for the dinosaurs was a serious issue due to the low end PC target - the gating factor on performance was triangle throughput on non-TnL graphics hardware. Dinosaur World uses an early pre-alpha release of the 1.0 engine prior to any performance work. The release version of Q1.0 managed to double the performance of the pre-alpha release that Dinosaur World was shipped with.

LEGO Creator Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Developer: Qube Software
Shipped: September 2002. Review/Buy.

LEGO Creator is the latest addition to LEGO Interactive's ongoing Creator franchise; it is the first Creator to be built by Qube and the first to be powered by Q.
LEGO Creator IV, 'Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets' is now on the shelves - bigger, brighter, faster, and more fun than its predecessors.

LEGO Creator IV was built using the 1.0 version of Q. The game itself was targeted at the age range of 6-8 and while simplistic in game experience it contains complex functionality including a complete and accurate LEGO connectivity simulation.

The two main challenges of the product for Q1.0 were a) LEGO brick "stud" rendering performance and b) the fact that an arbitrarily complex world can be built in the product. Creator IV contains a LEGO builder application that allows you to build with LEGO and populate game worlds with your creations.

Detailed stud rendering rapidly sent polygon counts well above acceptable numbers for the target hardware but quality studs were an important requirement. The problem was addressed intensively using the Q LOD (Level Of Detail) system; the shipping version of Creator used five LOD levels on every individual stud, as well as three LOD levels for the bricks' bodies.

The problem of arbitrarily complex scenes was again addressed by using the LOD system. A performance option was added that altered the Q LOD bias. Tuning Q LOD bias allows applications to set the overall LOD transition distances for a whole scene. This can make LOD pops more visible but greatly increases performance of scene rendering. For Creator IV we had two options - high and low detail.

For these LOD systems to work effectively all characters, scene detail models and LEGO models were authored with well-designed LOD levels.

LEGO Digital Designer

Developer: Qube Software
Shipped: July 2003. Download.

LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) is an exciting extension of the LEGO simulation software developed at Qube. It is a great opportunity to build a robust editing tool and UI system on Q. We are very pleased with the results so far.

LDD uses a sophisticated, skinable GUI built on Q's layer API

LDD ships on Q1.0

Q Demo 1

Developer: Qube Software
Shipped: Jan 2002 (PC), July 2003 (PS2/Xbox). Download.

QDemo1 was built as an application to demonstrate rendering quality and as a performance tester for Q.

One particular aim was to see how far we could push high quality real-time Phong illumination with including specular mapping, especially on the PS2. We are very happy with the results as no other PS2 middleware can achieve the same level of lighting. We aim to continue pushing the performance envelope for real-time lighting for future versions of Q.

The Demo uses assets from an in-house game project for Xbox and PS2 and comes with complete media and code.

Q Demo 2

Developer: Qube Software
Shipped: June 2003 (PC), July 2003 (PS2/Xbox). Download.

Q Demo 2 was built as a complete game implementation test for Q on consoles and PCs and serves as an excellent starting point and time saver for developers building titles on Q.

Q Demo 2 is a completely streamed cross-platform application and uses assets from an in-house game for Xbox and PS2.

The package is delivered with media, source, a complete authoring pipeline, and a user production guide. It gives developers a huge productivity boost by providing:

  • a ready to run authoring path and asset build system.
  • a ready to use working and documented game code base.
  • a production guide describing the how and why of building content for QDemo2.
  • example content for Q assets.

Together these features greatly reduce the learning time for building real quality game functionality on Q.

Q Demo 2 is introduced as part of Q version 1.1. It is designed to enable developers to hit the ground running with any new Q game project.
