The hardest jobs to automate are also the hardest jobs to fill. There are hundreds of thousands of unfilled manufacturing roles in the U.S. right now, and the gap is widening: a workforce that's retiring, fewer young people stepping into these roles, and reshoring adding demand faster than it can be met. These are the physically punishing, repetitive tasks people have steadily moved away from. That gap is why Digit exists. Not to replace the work people want, but to take on the work they've stepped away from, so the roles that stay hard to fill can still get done. The biggest thing standing between humanoid robots and real work isn't intelligence. It isn't better hands or a bigger battery. It's a fence. Almost every humanoid doing real work today does it alone, roped off behind a barrier. I've watched a lot of humanoid demo videos lately. Some are genuinely impressive. Almost none of them tell you what actually matters: can this robot do useful work safely on a real facility floor every day for years? That gap, between what demos well and what delivers value in operational deployment, is the most important story in our industry right now. So I wrote down what I think actually separates the companies that will scale from the companies that make good videos. It comes down to a few institutional choices. Start with the workflows customers genuinely can't staff, not the ones that look good on camera. Choose durable, adaptable hardware over things like fragile five-fingered hands. Design for safety from the start, instead of trying to bolt it on later. Treat fleet support as a product, not an afterthought. None of that makes for a flashy 30-second clip.
