Pittsburgh’s Robotics and AI Discovery Day brought together thousands of local innovators and 250+ exhibitors, even as partner Pittsburgh Robotics Network faces funding cuts and layoffs. Discovery Day strives to build Pittsburgh’s robotics ecosystem by generating new partnerships between industry leaders, investors and those seeking work with employment opportunities. The event consisted of panels from companies like FORT Robotics and Hellbender Inc., networking and a defense pavilion that leaned into pairing physical AI with dual-use defense tech.

What does it take to turn an idea into a competition-ready robot? Meet Team 74 CHAOS, a FIRST Robotics Competition team made up of students from Haworth’s hometown of Holland, Michigan. As the team’s founding sponsor, Haworth has supported generations of students as they learn alongside mentors, build real-world skills, and discover where those skills can take them. During the 2026 season, we followed Team 74 CHAOS from first concepts to final competition, documenting the problem-solving determination behind every step. The Duck-a-Tron! 🤖🦆 Dmitry Maslov built a robot arm that's capable of picking and placing rubber ducks, powered by the new Arduino VENTUNO Q. His project explores fine-tuning Hugging Face's SmolVLA model with a dataset of just 50 demonstrations and optimizing inference on the board for efficient edge robotics.

The new school year at RoboWow started with a super fun and creative Robot SUMO challenge! 🤖🔥 About every fourth lesson, I organize a creative competition where students receive only part of the model as a reference, while the rest of the robot is designed and built by them using the knowledge they have gained in class. During this lesson, we explore many interesting engineering concepts, such as gear reduction, center of mass, how to make a robot stronger but slower, and how the robot’s weight and weight distribution affect traction and pushing force. Plug and Play Cedar Park hosted its Summer Expo Batch 6, bringing together leaders in microelectronics and robotics to share insights on the future of Advanced Manufacturing. In celebrating it's three year anniversary, Plug and Play Cedar Park announced a new three-year renewal to continue expanding the innovation economy in Texas. The fall semester is in full swing, and so are University of Cincinnati student orgs. 🤖⚙️ Another group that brings together Bearcats from all majors to design, build, and battle robots weighing 1, 3 or 12 pounds is the UCCR - University of Cincinnati Combat Robotics Club. They specifically use the UC Ground Floor Makerspace to build fully functional, competition-ready robots—learning everything from machining and fabrication to electronics, teamwork and problem-solving along the way. Nearly every UC combat robot has roots in the Makerspace, including Maximizer and Robo-Cat, formidable battlebots built to win. What makes the club even more valuable? Students aren't just building for a competition. They’re taking ideas from the classroom, like their capstone projects and turning them into real, working builds.
