I've had a tremendous response to my Summer Internship 2027 post so I want to clarify something up front: I don't have the details of our team's 2027 internship positions yet. The specific openings and application details are still being finalized. My goal right now is to start connecting with students who might be interested once those opportunities become available. For our team specifically, there are a few important things to know up front: the work would be onsite in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires. U.S. citizenship is required, and you would need to be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance. You do not need to already have one. If those things work for you, here's the part I'm excited about. The GDMS summer internship program is typically a 10–12 week experience, and it's much more than just sitting next to someone and watching them work. Interns participate in mentoring, professional development, networking events, leadership sessions, manager lunches, volunteering, and an end-of-summer presentation. And then there's the actual technical experience. Our infrastructure team works across networking, Linux and Windows, servers, virtualization, cybersecurity, automation, scripting, containers, DevSecOps, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and increasingly AI and AIOps. That's a lot. An intern isn't coming here because they already know it. They're coming here because they want the chance to learn it. You might see how engineers troubleshoot a network when the answer isn't obvious. You might work around Linux or Windows systems, security tools, automation, scripting, virtualization, or infrastructure you've only read about in class. You may come in thinking networking is your thing and discover Linux. Maybe you're studying cybersecurity and realize you really like automation. Maybe you still have no idea which direction you want to go. That's okay. That's one of the things an internship should help you figure out. The internship program is open pretty broadly to college students, from rising freshmen through postgraduate students, provided you're enrolled in a related academic program and can commit to the required summer schedule. So again, I'm not announcing a Summer 2027 opening yet. I'm trying to connect with good students now so that when those positions are finalized, we've already started the conversation. 🎓 Wrapping up the Cyberster Blue Team Internship — Week 12 Twelve weeks ago I started this internship not knowing exactly where it would take me. Twelve weeks and two full domains later, I can say it took me further than I expected. The internship was split across two core pillars of Blue Team defense: 🔹 SOC Operations — log analysis, alert triage, detection engineering, and building the muscle memory to tell real signal from noise 🔹 Digital Forensics & Incident Response — disk, memory, and USB forensics; building an evidentiary case from raw artifacts instead of assumptions Week 12 was the capstone: a full four-part insider threat investigation — from system triage and memory analysis with Volatility, through USB and deleted-file recovery, to a final forensic report answering the three questions every investigation comes down to: what happened, who did it, and how do you prove it. The biggest lesson from this internship wasn't a tool or a command — it was learning to let the evidence lead the conclusion, not the other way around. Every finding in this report is cited back to a specific artifact, because in this field, "I think" doesn't hold up — "here's the hash, here's the timestamp, here's the match" does. Huge thanks to Abdullah Zia for the mentorship throughout this program — for pushing me to document rigorously, question my own assumptions, and treat every finding as something that has to survive scrutiny. Week 12 of my Blue Team Internship at Cyberster — and that's a wrap. 🎓 The final week brought everything together in one real capstone investigation, an insider-threat case spanning disk, memory, and removable media: ◆ Built a multi-source case combining a primary disk image and two USB devices in Autopsy — then stepped outside it entirely for the first time to analyze a raw RAM capture ◆ Used Volatility 3 to pull live process trees, and hit a hard framework wall — the RAM dump came from a Windows XP-era machine, which Volatility 3's network plugins don't support at all. Had to pivot to Volatility 2 with the correct legacy profile instead of forcing a tool that wasn't built for the target OS ◆ Practiced subject profiling before touching evidence of wrongdoing — establishing what "normal" looked like for the user first, so later findings could be judged against a real baseline instead of assumptions ◆ Cross-referenced volatile memory against disk artifacts and external media to build a single timeline instead of three disconnected stories — the same file can leave a footprint in three different places, and each one only makes sense next to the others ◆ Traced file movement across removable storage using timestamps and hash verification, treating every timestamp as a claim that needs a second source before it goes in a report ◆ Closed the loop the same way I have all internship: findings only count once they're supported by hash values, cited artifacts, and a timeline that survives scrutiny — not by what looks suspicious on first glance The biggest lesson of the whole internship comes down to one thing: every layer — network, host, memory, media — tells a partial story, and the real skill isn't finding evidence, it's proving it holds together end to end. Twelve weeks, one lab built from scratch, and a lot of "why isn't this working" turned into "here's why it wasn't." This week was a massive milestone, marking the transition from onboarding and theory to hands-on execution and comprehensive reporting. Here is a breakdown of how the week unfolded: ▪️ Mentorship & Strategic Execution: Kicked off the week with my first official mentoring session. Receiving clear project expectations allowed me to structure my approach systematically and ensure my technical execution aligned perfectly with the team's goals. ▪️ Collaborative Troubleshooting: When technical hurdles arose during the assignment, I actively participated in group problem-solving sessions. Brainstorming attack vectors and bypasses with peers not only cleared the roadblocks but refined my overall methodology. ▪️ Delivering Actionable Intelligence: By the end of the week, I successfully completed and submitted my first major project. Drafting the final report wasn't just about dumping raw technical data, I focused heavily on structuring it as a professional deliverable that communicates clear business impact and actionable remediation for my mentors. ▪️ The Daily Grind on HTB: Theory is great, but practical application is everything. Every single day this week, I made sure to fire up my Kali VM and jump into Hack The Box. Continuously grinding through these hands-on vulnerability assessments keeps my analytical mindset sharp and ensures I am ready for whatever legacy application or complex logic flaw comes my way next. Consistency is key in offensive security, and balancing daily project responsibilities with continuous upskilling has been incredibly rewarding. I’m stepping into Week 4 with a much stronger technical foundation and a refined approach to threat analysis. If you're a college student looking at IT internships and seeing job descriptions full of things like BGP, Kubernetes, Terraform, RHEL, Ansible, firewalls, CI/CD and cybersecurity standards... You're not supposed to know all of that yet. Seriously. That's part of why internships exist. I'm starting to think ahead to Summer 2027 and connect with students who might be interested in spending a summer with our IT/infrastructure team at General Dynamics Mission Systems in the Berkshires. The interesting part of our team is just how much technology crosses through it. Networking. Linux and Windows. Servers and virtualization. Cybersecurity. Automation and scripting. Containers and DevSecOps. Cloud infrastructure. And now AI and AIOps are becoming part of that world too. An intern isn't going to show up and be expected to be an expert in those things. What I'd want someone to get out of a summer with us is the chance to see how they actually work together. Why does DNS matter so much? What really happens when a packet can't get where it's going? How do you troubleshoot a Linux server when the answer isn't in the lab instructions? Why automate something instead of doing it manually? How do security requirements change the way you build a system? What does enterprise infrastructure actually look like compared with the network you built for a class or at home? That's the stuff an internship should teach you. By the end of the summer, I'd rather you leave with a bunch of stories about things you helped troubleshoot, build, automate or figure out than just another line on your résumé.
