Imagine you've just opened an email from your manager that says, "Can we talk later?" Before you've even had a chance to think, your heart starts racing, your stomach drops, your mind jumps to, "What did I do wrong?" Sound familiar? In the last lesson, we talked about how your nervous system automatically responds to stress. The good news is you don't have to let that automatic response make your decisions for you. One of the most effective ways to regulate your emotions is surprisingly simple. Pause and name what you're feeling. Psychologists sometimes call this affect labeling, or as the saying goes, name it to tame it. Research shows that putting words to an emotion can reduce its intensity and help you respond more thoughtfully. So the next time you notice yourself reacting to a stressful situation, try this three-step process. First, pause. Before you fire off a response or start imagining the worst, take a moment.
