Cascada Expediciones and EcoCamp Patagonia nominated in prestigious travel awards

The annual tourism season is slowly coming to an end at Cascada Expediciones and EcoCamp Patagonia. Over the past 10 months, we had the privilege of welcoming 4,700 travelers to discover and experience Chile and Argentina with us. Together, they enjoyed more than 23,000 outdoor experiences, while our team designed nearly 2,000 itineraries.

These numbers leave us amazed and fill us with gratitude toward everyone who trusted us to turn their travel ideas into reality and create meaningful connections with nature.

We are therefore very proud to once again be nominated in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards and the World Travel Awards for our services as a hotel and tour operator in Chile. In the north of Chile lives the remarkable Darwin’s leaf-eared mouse. This tiny rodent can be found up to 2,400 meters in altitude. It measures between 9 and 12 cm from head to body, with a long tail and notably large ears.

About 2,300 miles / 3,700 kilometers from the Chilean mainland lies Easter Island or locally known as Rapa Nui. It’s only 63 square miles / 165 km² in size, but it holds a long history, a rich Polynesian culture, and, perhaps most famously, more than 900 Moai statues carved between the 11th and 16th centuries by the island’s inhabitants. These statues are scattered across beaches, green hills, and volcanic craters.

Camila and Belén, two Travel Experience Designers at Cascada Expediciones, were eager to explore Easter Island and returned with many stories and tips. Time for a conversation!

If you visit the Magallanes region, you must try the local lamb. Various farms here breed sheep for both meat and wool.

The industry began in the late 19th century with the arrival of sheep from the Falkland Islands, encouraged by the governor of Magallanes, Diego Duble Ameyda. The government granted large tracts of land to sheep farmers, leading to estancias (sheep farms) that centralized production. The sheep industry expanded rapidly, becoming vital to the region's economy, history, and culture.

Once the lambs reach the ideal age for high-quality meat, they are slaughtered, and the meat is exported to China, Europe, and North America. Due to its rich flavor, leanness, and tenderness, Magellanic lamb is considered a premium product. In 2023, Chile ranked 7th among the top lamb-exporting countries, with an export value of $25.5 million, behind major players like New Zealand and Australia.
