The Routledge Companion to Philosophy and Film

About the Author

Paisley Livingston is Professor of Philosophy at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. He is the author of Art and Intention: A Philosophical Study, and coeditor (with Berys Gaut) of The Creation of Art: New Essays in Philosophical Aesthetics.
Carl Plantinga is Professor of Film Studies in the Communication Arts and Sciences Department at Calvin College, USA. He is the author of Rhetoric and Representation in Nonfiction Film, and coeditor (with Greg M. Smith) of Passionate Views: Film, Cognition and Emotion.

    Carl Plantinga, Senior Research Fellow at Calvin University and former Arthur H. DeKruyter Chair of Communication, writes about topics in film and media theory. He has a Ph.D. in Communication (Film) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where wrote his dissertation under under David Bordwell and Noël Carroll. He also has an M.A. from the University of Iowa and a B.A. from Calvin University, where he majored in philosophy and studied with aesthetician Nicholas Wolterstorff.

    Plantinga has written extensively about film and emotion, film and ethics, documentary film, and cognitive film theory generally. He is the past president of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image and is the recipient of major grants from the Templeton Religion Trust. He has written four books and edited three more. He is currently at work on a monograph entitled "Narrative/Character Engagement and the Moral Imagination."
