The survey will help Identify gender-specific problems faced by PWDs; Identify coping mechanisms and needs of PWDs; Establish the social inclusion of PWDs; and Establish the nature of services and rehabilitation programmes available for PWDs by type of disability.

The survey will give an estimate number of PWDs and their distribution in the country; help examine the demographic, socio-economic, sociocultural and geographic characteristics of PWDs; Determine the nature, types and causes of the disabilities in the country;

The last census included one module on disability with eight questions. The first six questions were drawn from the Washington Group on Disability Short Set of Questions(WG_SS). The other two addressed albinism and problems in engaging in economic activities due to disability.

During the ongoing virtual meeting, Mr Omondi requested the Technical Working Commitee to also explore possibilities of funding a PWD survey which will provide more information on various disabilities not established during the last census @i2iaid @ilo @FCDOGovUK

The Disability Statistics Technical Working committee brings together different stakeholders from the disability fraternity. They will work on how to collect, analyse, publish and disseminate PWD administrative data lying in different institutions. @i2iaid @ilo @FCDOGovUK

As we participate in this training lets ensure we involve everyone eg speak in moderate speed for the sign language interpreters to capture messages, using easy to understand language and importantly ensuring that we leave no one behind in our discussions @kiraithegk

This kind of data can be utilised in planning, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and projects. Without data, we cannot know where a country stands with respect to the situation of persons with disabilities, said Mr Gitonga.

We welcome the approach taken by KNBS and other stakeholders to ensure disability statistics is not only given prominence in National censuses and surveys but also extended to administrative data, that is regularly collected by the various government agencies and other partners.

4)Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) This approach is similar to the ADLs except that IADLs are higher order tasks Examples include whether a person has problems managing money, shopping for groceries, or maintaining their household
