“We believe the history of Yahoo, going back to the beginning, is helping the open web survive and thrive.” Yahoo CEO Jim Lanzone took the stage at HumanX in Amsterdam this week to talk about the future of internet search, including the importance of linking back to sources within Yahoo Scout, and why sending traffic back to publishers is core to the social contract of the internet. Yahoo made a keyboard covered in grass. Weirdly, I think it contains a pretty important lesson for brands. I’ve been digging into Yahoo’s brand strategy and how it’s making a 30-year-old internet brand culturally relevant again for our Behind the Brands newsletter... now one of the #40 fastest-growing Substacks in the world, with over 15,000 readers. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eiVJKhPJ Here’s a sneak peek... For people of my generation, Yahoo sits somewhere in the brain alongside MSN Messenger, dial-up internet and asking Jeeves things. But recently something strange has been happening. Cardi B. Weird memes. A grass-covered keyboard. A ring designed to stop you scrolling. Suddenly a 31-year-old technology company seems to be having more fun than brands founded three years ago. I spoke to Kemma Kefalas, Senior Director of Yahoo Creative Lab, to understand what the hell is going on. And what I found is a really interesting lesson in how heritage brands can use their past to build relevance rather than running away from it. Here are three things that jumped out... 🕰️ They’re not running away from their past. Yahoo calls its approach “modern vintage”. Rather than binning 30 years of history, they’re mining it. Even the famous Yahoo yodel is back. Heritage brands often spend millions removing the very distinctive brand assets that made them recognisable in the first place. 🌱 They made a keyboard covered in grass. Which sounds ridiculous. But Yahoo asks a brutally simple question of its content: “Will they care? Will they share?” If the team wouldn’t voluntarily send something to a friend, they’ll kill it. Compare that with how much brand content nobody involved would willingly watch, yet somehow still gets £500k of media put behind it. 🧠 They’re protecting their weirdness. We’ve become obsessed with researching, testing and optimising everything. Yahoo is putting more faith in experienced people having what Kemma brilliantly calls “excellent guts in the room.” Data can help interesting creative work travel further. But it can also slowly sand away everything that made the work interesting. Which raises a bigger question: Have brands become so obsessed with optimisation that we’ve optimised the interesting bits out of marketing? Because a keyboard covered in grass has a fighting chance of getting talked about. Another generic social post probably doesn’t. Read the full piece on Yahoo’s brand strategy, distinctive assets and return to cultural relevance in Behind the Brands above.

In the latest edition of ⚒️ Built by Yahoo 🧰, a series exploring the tech, talent, and tactics modernizing our products, we ask: what happens when code stops being the bottleneck? As AI has dramatically streamlined software production, it has also dramatically changed how engineers think about their careers. The role is moving to a higher level of abstraction. Engineering value increasingly comes from defining problems, evaluating solutions, and improving the way teams build. As Matt Sanchez says: "The real work is moving to specification and evaluation—to thinking through what you're trying to accomplish rather than the implementation layer. That will play to the strengths of the very best engineers." Get the full story: https://lnkd.in/eVjsKZME
