Another incredible conversation — this time with the Governance Professionals who are so often behind the governance happening in our Boardrooms. A huge thank you to the GPs from across Canada who joined us today, and Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC) for creating the space for this conversation. We talked about modernizing Board evaluations — but through a very different lens. Sharing this with the GPC community was especially meaningful as governance professionals sit at a unique intersection of the Board, Chair, Committees and Management. They see the holistic formal governance system, but they also see what lies beneath - where things get stuck, where issues keep resurfacing, and how governance works in practice. And that creates an enormous opportunity for GPs to shift from administrators to architects. Not simply: How do we administer this year’s evaluation? and How did we perform? But: What does our Board need to understand about its governance right now and are we prepared to govern what's next? Thank you to everyone who showed up, challenged the thinking and shared their perspectives today. What would change on your board if your next evaluation started with those questions? Public-sector leaders are expected to make defensible decisions, often under sustained pressure, with incomplete information and competing priorities. At next week's Governance Institute of Australia National Public Sector Governance Forum, Battleground will bring that challenge to life through a live inquiry simulation. Participants will be asked to navigate the decisions, governance questions, escalation points and accountability challenges that emerge when a serious issue comes under public scrutiny. It is one thing to discuss governance in principle. It is another to practise it when the questions are live, the facts are evolving and the consequences are real. Join us at the Forum on 9 September with Craig Goldberg and Peter Duffy and the Governance Institute of Australia. https://lnkd.in/gbitBf-m #PublicSector #Governance #RiskManagement #PublicAdministration #CrisisManagement #OperationalResilience #GIA #Battleground

Who Owns the Whole Outcome? A system can have plenty of people with authority and still have nobody who clearly owns the outcome. That's the organizational problem behind the joke: Everyone got a seat at the table. Nobody got the check. This creates a fundamental governance question: Is the institution responsive or insulated? Can the people affected by a decision actually reach someone with the authority to address it? Good governance requires more than distributing responsibility. It requires visible ownership of outcomes. That means: Apply the same standard regardless of which political party controls the institution. Accountability shouldn't be something we demand only when the other side is in charge. It should be part of the architecture. #WhoOwnsTheOutcome #Governance #InstitutionalAccountability #OrganizationalDesign #GovernmentReform #PublicAdministration #PoliticalAccountability #GovernmentTransparency #RiskManagement #BeyondRedAndBlue #SummerDeepDives

What happens when the governance structure on paper no longer quite matches how an organisation works in practice❓ The RIPE NCC is proposing a new Board structure to better reflect the roles already carried out by the Board and CEO today. Athina Fragkouli, LL.M. and Fergal Cunningham answer key questions, including why the change is being proposed and whether the current Board would lose any power. 💡 See how the proposed structure would work: https://lnkd.in/eG2WpyU8

Good governance is not only about making the right decision—it is about creating a record that demonstrates how and why it was made. The September edition of The #Director’sDilemma examines a familiar #boardroom challenge: managing a conflict of interest when the commercial decision may be sound, but the documentation is not. Julie Garland McLellan, Scott Eversman of AltoPartners Executive Search explore the issue through Australian, UK and US governance lenses, offering practical lessons for boards in every jurisdiction. #CorporateGovernance #BoardLeadership #BoardEffectiveness #RiskManagement #AltoPartners https://lnkd.in/dfbTMiMp

Good policy does not automatically produce good governance—the decisive test is whether it delivers at the district level. This presentation proposes a lean District Delivery Unit that converts administrative data into decisions, breaks interdepartmental bottlenecks and focuses leadership attention on a small number of measurable citizen outcomes. The model is designed not as another bureaucratic layer, but as an execution mechanism for making existing government systems work better.

The second updated resource: Estates Are a Governance Issue Estates are not just an operational issue. They are a governance issue. Many boards receive condition reports, compliance updates and capital programme information. But governance is about assurance. How do trustees and governors know: • Buildings support learning? • Inclusion and SEND needs are being met? • Staff can work in safe and accessible environments? • Sustainability plans are making a difference? • Investment decisions are improving outcomes? Good governance requires more than data. It requires challenge, scrutiny and assurance. I've produced a free resource exploring why the Education Estates Strategy should be on every board agenda. Because estates management is ultimately about people, outcomes and organisational effectiveness, not just buildings. ⬇️ Free to download and share - also please do get in contact if you would like to discuss how Legacy Governance Solutions or The Estates Strategy Partnership can support your governance discussions! #EducationEstates #SchoolGovernance #Trustees #Governors #MAT #Leadership #EducationLeadership #RiskManagement

Board evaluation should be as much about future readiness as past performance. A board may have governed yesterday’s risks well and still lack the capabilities, information or decision processes needed for what comes next. Evaluation should help surface that gap before circumstances do.
