With Alberto Andreetto we laughed, debated, and occasionally got lost somewhere between data structures, interfaces, and philosophical questions about what “designing” even means now. It’s been equal parts messy, fun, and mind-bending. We tried to capture some of that in this article that we wrote for others but even just for us. The #Human Edge in an AI World. That was the title of the session. The content was sharper than the title. Paolo Borghi — economic and labour sociologist at the University of Pavia — presented his research on #AI and communication professions at the #MORE Excellence World Conference 2026. Scenarios, risks, opportunities. No hype, no panic. Just data. One number stayed with me: 34 out of 36 active users in his study cited #ChatGPT as their primary tool for content creation. That's not adoption. That's dependence on a single tool, which is a different conversation entirely. The real question his session put on the table wasn't whether AI is changing communications. It is, visibly, fast, irreversibly. The question is whether agencies are using it to free up time for strategic thinking — or just to produce more of the same, faster. The human edge in an AI world isn't about resisting the tools. It's about being clear on what the tools can't replace: judgment, relationships, context, accountability. That's what we do. Making digital cultural heritage accessible. Two projects I had the privilege of coordinating are online: the renewed Liberabit digital library of the University of Salerno and Digit.a.re, the new digital repository of the Comune di Reggio Emilia. Different institutions, different histories — yet a common purpose: making cultural heritage accessible, open, and usable for everyone. Liberabit offers an expanded and immersive gateway into the university’s bibliographic and archival richness — from personal fonds to periodicals, from manuscripts to unique documentary materials. Digit.a.re, instead, brings together more than a century of visual memory from Reggio Emilia: photographs, prints, maps, graphic works, and visual documents spanning multiple techniques and generations. The projects are based on the Lyrasis & 4Science DSpace‑GLAM full-open-source ecosystem. They are integrated with the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) standard, which enables interoperable visualisation, comparison, and reuse of digital images across different platforms. This ensures sustainable collection management and advanced consultation features. Liberabit and Digit.a.re show something simple and powerful: open‑source digital libraries are civic ecosystems. They democratize access to knowledge and allow institutions to preserve and share their heritage all over the world. They make cultural memory searchable, reusable, and comparable. In a nutshell: they turn collections into commons. Digital cultural heritage as a way to interpret the future we are shaping. Audience Measurement and Digital Platforms: the role of the Italian Communication Authority AGCOM in the EMFA Era. In Italy, AGCOM plays a key role in overseeing and guiding audience measurement systems, ensuring that data collection aligns with principles of methodological soundness, transparency, verifiability, and independent certification. Measurements must also be carried out by entities that represent the full spectrum of the media sector. The topic of audience measurement has gained strategic importance across Europe with the entry into force of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) in May 2024. Article 24 of the EMFA specifically addresses the need for audience measurement systems to follow industry standards and best practices, and highlights concerns around proprietary measurement methodologies that lack transparency and comparability. The absence of shared standards and independently certified, verifiable methodologies—particularly for digital platforms—creates information asymmetries and impacts the fair allocation of advertising and investment. To address this, AGCOM has launched an inquiry aimed at: - Analyzing methodologies used for measuring content distribution on digital platforms - Defining the scope of what should be measured - Setting out guidance to ensure that measurements are transparent, comparable, and reliable This initiative will also assess the compatibility of current audience measurement practices with the new EMFA requirements, AGCOM’s own guidelines (Resolution 194/21/CONS), and the provisions of the Italian Consolidated Law on Audiovisual Media Services. The era of websites as isolated digital islands is ending. We are entering the AI-first era, where a site is no longer just a visual interface – it’s a semantic node in a global, intelligent ecosystem. In this new landscape: - Navigation is driven by intent, not menus. - Content is structured as data, ready to be translated and adapted instantly. The “design material” is no longer just typography and colors, but categories, labels, and semantic maps that give context to AI. These are the most likely #work areas to be effected by #AI. #anthropic released this and it’s thoroughly interesting. Remember, change should not be fought against but embraced intelligently. Learn new skills, reorganise your work and become the owner of new technologies, not the slave.

Paolo is spot on with his thoughts on education for AI. Without the proper training of critical thinking and judgement “they will no longer be able to distinguish an excellent raw idea from a trivial refined idea.”
