The EENA 112 annual conference provides a great opportunity to make connections and learn from the great work organisations are doing to support the public when they need to make THAT call for help. Our chair, Darryl Keen, and Chief Operating Officer, Duncan Swan, are out in Riga this week - so do pull them aside if you are there and want a conversation. And it’s great to see two of our British APCO bursary winners - Louis Fraser and past winner Aaron Page - at the event along with many other familiar faces from across the sector, including several who are an integral part of CC:IPS. We wish EENA 112 every success over the next three days !

At British APCO we see supporting the Control Room Awards as a privilege - this will be the fourth year that we have our own category dedicated to those who work behind the scenes delivering the IT & Comms solutions that help the heroes under the headsets do their job a little more efficiently and effectively. The winners to date have all thoroughly deserved the accolade - do you know someone you work with who “fits the bill”? For all of the award categories you have until the 17 May to submit an application - together, let’s help make 2026 the best year yet for applications across all categories each of which seeks to recognise the often unsung work of our Control Room Heroes !
We’re delighted to announce that British APCO will once again be supporting the Control Room Awards as a sponsor for 2026. They continue to sponsor the British APCO Control Room Innovation Award, recognising those who are pushing boundaries and using technology to make a real, tangible difference in the control room environment. This award celebrates individuals or teams who are driving innovation, whether within control rooms, supporting IT and communications infrastructure, or working across commercial organisations to deliver impactful change. From improving day-to-day operations for control room staff to enhancing outcomes for the public in their most critical moments, this award shines a light on those leading the way. Know someone making a difference through innovation? Nominate them here: https://lnkd.in/eMyBQtNm Criteria includes: • Demonstrating leadership and ownership in delivering change • Evidencing real impact for operators and/or the public • Engaging and collaborating with control room teams • Sharing learning and improvements across organisations Let’s celebrate the innovators shaping the future of control rooms.

🚨 The future of emergency communications is already here — are we ready? If you were at our recent BAPCO Annual Event, where we brought together critical communication technology companies with emergency services experts, we are sure your answer will be yes! Across the UK, control rooms and frontline teams are navigating a major shift: ➡️ From voice to data ➡️ From siloed systems to shared intelligence ➡️ From radio-only to mission-critical broadband But transformation isn’t just about technology — it’s about interoperability, standards, and people. At BAPCO, we’re seeing three priorities emerge in 2026: 1️⃣ Smarter data sharing between agencies 2️⃣ Greater resilience in communications infrastructure 3️⃣ Supporting control room professionals through change The question is: what’s the biggest challenge YOU are facing right now? 👇 Share your thoughts — we’d love to hear from across the sector. #EmergencyServices #PublicSafety #999 #NG999 #Interoperability #BAPCO

As a not-for-profit, user-led association with charitable status, British APCO is required to have Trustees who form the Board of Directors and are responsible for the organisation. All our Trustees are volunteers with demanding day jobs within the public safety sector, and we are grateful to them—and to their employers—for allowing them the time to perform these roles. The Board is headed by the British APCO Chair, who is supported by the Vice-Chair. Serving as Chair of British APCO—formerly known as President—is both an honour and a responsibility. It was therefore a poignant moment to see the reins handed over from Chris Lucas to Darryl Keen at our annual celebration during the BAPCO Annual Event. Chris has just begun his tenth year as a Board member and has served as Chair for the past three years. At our Board meeting earlier this week, Darryl commented: “I want to record a huge vote of thanks to Chris, who has led the Board professionally and with clear focus on our vision over the last three years. Chris had big shoes to fill, taking over from John Anthony MBE, and he has done so brilliantly. It feels like standing on the shoulders of giants—and Chris, I’m now going to stand on yours! We are undoubtedly in a better place because of everything you—and before you, John—have done to make British APCO what it is today.” With Darryl taking on the role of Chair, we are pleased to confirm that Matt Leat has agreed to become Vice-Chair—thank you, Matt. British APCO has a long history of volunteers supporting and leading the Association, and with Darryl and Matt now in their respective roles, that tradition is set to continue.

Just in case you missed it during our BAPCO Annual Event last week, there's exciting news about emergency control rooms sharing incident data instantly across services using the MAIT standard. 🚨 𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗧 (𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿) Enables a major step forward in improving emergency response times: • Expected to save vital minutes during multi-agency incidents • Implemented by Fire and Rescue Services across England in response to the Grenfell inquiry • Further take-up by Coastguard and Police Forces • Additional functionality supported by Ordnance Survey • MAIT schema overseen by British APCO. We are here to support and further develop MAIT and encourage other agencies to investigate how it can benefit their operations.
