Yesterday, ambassador Paul Huijts, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), met with IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez to discuss key developments in the maritime sector. The meeting reaffirmed the strong and long-standing cooperation between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the IMO, as well as the Netherlands’ active role as a member of the IMO Council. A particular focus was placed on the safety and wellbeing of seafarers, including Dutch crew and personnel serving on Dutch-flagged vessels currently affected in the Persian Gulf. The Kingdom of the Netherlands strongly supports the IMO’s efforts to establish a safe maritime corridor and reiterates that the safety, security, and welfare of seafarers must remain the highest priority, protected from geopolitical tensions at all times. 🌈 Today, on 1 April 2026, the Netherlands celebrates 25 years of marriage equality! In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to grant civil marriage to same-sex couples. This milestone is about more than marriage. It is about human dignity, freedom, and universal human rights. In a time of increasing polarisation, celebrating 25 years of marriage equality is also a call for unity against discrimination and division. Throughout 2026, our Embassy will mark this anniversary and reaffirm the Netherlands’ commitment to LGBT+ rights. We kicked off during LGBT+ History Month with a joint event with the UK FCDO’s FLAG network and the Embassies of Luxembourg and Belgium, featuring Dutch Deputy Secretary-General Hans Docter on a panel about the experiences of queer diplomats and civil servants. There is a lot to celebrate, but the message was clear: we cannot take progress for granted. 🌈 Follow our channels for more events in London as we celebrate 25 years of marriage equality throughout the year. Strengthening UK–NL cooperation in education, research and innovation 🇳🇱🤝🇬🇧 Last week, we were pleased to see the successful conclusion of the UK–Netherlands Education & Research Partnership Mission: From Research to Impact, bringing together senior representatives from higher education, government and the innovation sector from both our countries. A key milestone was the signing of a new three‑year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the British Council and Nuffic, the Netherlands’ national organisation for the internationalisation in education. This agreement 📌 Strengthens the strategic ties between our two education systems 📌 Expands opportunities for student mobility 📌 Deepens collaboration in areas where our countries share global ambitions in education and research. The mission offered a valuable platform to exchange views on how Dutch and UK institutions can work together to translate research excellence into societal benefit. From innovation ecosystems to mission driven universities, the discussions highlighted the strong appetite on both sides for continued cooperation. We congratulate our partners at Nuffic and the British Council for their commitment to expanding these connections, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this renewed collaboration in the years ahead. In conversation with Robbert Dijkgraaf and Christoph Lindner: Bridging Art, Science and Society. Robbert Dijkgraaf and Christoph Lindner explored the evolving roles of science, the arts and academia in our changing world. Bringing together these two leading thinkers offered both insight and inspiration. In an era of disinformation, political polarization and geopolitical uncertainty, universities – as institutions dedicated to knowledge production and democratic debate – are increasingly at the centre of discussions about responsibility, resilience and integrity. How can they remain relevant and trusted? And why are international collaboration in the arts and sciences, and science diplomacy, more essential than ever? One key theme was that the boundaries between science and the arts are “contracts” that should be dissolved. The strength of universities lies in their orientation towards engagement with society across all fields: as bridge builders, connectors, problem solvers and changemakers. Both Dijkgraaf and Lindner emphasized the need for active engagement of scientists, academics and universities with society, and reiterated the importance of lifelong learning and pushing back against the growing disregard for understanding. Many thanks to our co-organisers – the Dutch Centre, Amsterdams Universiteitsfonds (UvA Fonds) – as part of the UvA Alumni London Hub event, and to the wonderful, engaged audience. Robbert Dijkgraaf is former Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science, and a renowned mathematical physicist and academic leader. Christoph Lindner is President and Vice-Chancellor of the Royal College of Art, whose research spans disciplines including architecture, geography and cultural studies. This week, our Ambassador Paul Huijts, visited our new Honorary Consul in Gibraltar, Rocio Corrales Martín. Our Honorary Consuls are the “eyes and ears” of the Netherlands on the ground: they know the local context, build bridges, and help us to better support Dutch interests and Dutch nationals abroad. With Rocio, we have gained a strong new link in Gibraltar. While in Gibraltar, the Ambassador held productive meetings with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, Deputy Governor Marc Holland, Commander British Forces Tom Guy, the local business community and local Dutch citizens.
