Dana Strong CBE shared thisThe momentum is building to tackle one of the biggest challenges in sport - how to make sport more inclusive. The latest report from the UK Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee highlights the structural barriers still facing young people, particularly girls, when it comes to participation. It also points to what we can do to change this. What’s especially encouraging is how closely this aligns with the policy recommendations we set out in our Game Changing report. The call for more consistent, visible coverage of women’s sport is particularly powerful. There’s more to do but the conversation is shifting in a positive way. Continued collaboration between industry, government and communities will be key to what comes next.

Dana Strong CBE shared thisThis week, we held UP NEXT 2026, a showcase of the most exciting new shows coming to Sky. An all-star lineup of on-screen talent launched an incredible slate of Sky Originals, exclusive films, returning favourites and lifted the curtain on some of the shows in production right now. And we'll be making it even easier to love the world’s best entertainment on Sky. For the first time, Sky, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix and Hayu will come together in a single Sky subscription, for less than £1 a day. It’s about bringing our customers the best choice, a world-class experience and outstanding value, in a way only Sky can.

This is a milestone moment for Sky - and for the entertainment industry. For the first time, customers will have unmatched choice and real value, with the world’s best TV and film sitting side by side in one seamless experience. We know customers want this: a simpler, easier way to access the content they love, all in one place. By combining the most popular streaming apps with Sky Originals and Exclusives, we’re continuing Sky’s legacy of innovation, creating a smarter, more effortless way to watch. That's streaming the best TV, for less than £1 a day.

Dana Strong CBE shared thisToday people in the US are celebrating National Girls and Women in Sport Day with hundreds of grassroots events. It’s a day to honour the achievements of female athletes, to talk about how sport improves lives and to support the drive for equality for women in sport. It’s been running since 1987, and it’s incredibly powerful. What if we did the same thing for women and girls, here in the UK? As the UK’s leading investor in women’s sport, at Sky, we’d be proud to take a day to celebrate women in sport, every year. Our recent report Gamechanging: How sport gives every girl a better chance shone a light on the gender gap in sport, and what we can do about it. A national day to celebrate women in sport is one of our key recommendations. Together, I hope we’ll make it happen. Link to find out more in the comments.

Dana Strong CBE shared thisYesterday, we kicked off 2026 with our first Hello Sky of the year, where we set out how we’re performing and where we’re heading next. As we celebrate Sky's new partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB, we were excited to be joined by four remarkable athletes. Their energy, honesty and ambition captured exactly what this partnership stands for. Their stories were a powerful reminder of what it takes to keep getting better: resilience, discipline and a relentless focus on progress. In 2026, we’re focused on delivering even more of the shows, sports and experiences our customers love.

Dana Strong CBE shared thisWe’re making a major investment in our Livingston campus, strengthening Sky’s long-term commitment to Scotland. Livingston has been home to Sky’s customer service operation for more than 30 years, and this development builds on that history and our presence in Scotland. The expanded, state-of-the-art campus will support thousands of local jobs, create new opportunities for businesses and drive regional growth. It’s an exciting next chapter for Sky in Scotland, and I’m proud of the impact this investment will have for colleagues, partners and the wider community. https://lnkd.in/erzxTJ8j

Dana Strong CBE shared thisLast week, it was incredible to see so many people from our Sky team stepping up to volunteer for charity. Wearing their best Christmas jumpers, they came out in force to support The Multibank, a fantastic charity that helps people living in poverty. Our UK team wrapped over 8,000 gifts that will be passed on to people and families who would otherwise have little or nothing this Christmas. Across the Sky Group, our teams wrapped even more, bringing our total up to over 10,000 gifts for The Multibank, Age UK and local charities. I'd like to say a huge thank you to every single person who took part. Thanks to you, thousands of people and their families will feel a little joy this Christmas. It's moments like this that make Christmas special.

The comments about the quality of the existing DTT infrastructure are only part of the discussion. DTT currently provides a limited service to 98.5% of the population (three muxes), with the best available figure for all six being 90%. It should also be noted that the majority of the services are also in SD (576i) only, and whilst it may be positive to describe the utilisation being at 97% of the six mux capacity, that is also saying it has a lack of capacity for modern video services where HD is the minimum. The upbeat view also ignores that the 'majority' of services view is just over the 50%, not in the 90% area, and includes PVR playback of content, which can be handled by catchup based services. And the issue is that these numbers above are 'now', and the rate of change is considerable so that by 2034, the percentage of usage may be somewhat lower than 15% of viewing. The key question is about when it is no longer financially or audience viewing viable to support even a basic service, and that seems to be within the timescales that are being discussed, so would it not be better to lean in to the transition and focus on resolving the transition issues of that small percentage of consumers who are at risk of having issues of transition rather than hanging on ...

Less is more, but this is also a sign of the updated role of a linear channel in 2026 compared to 1996 - today it delivers live events still of course, but it is moving towards not being the primary delivery method of the peak viewing hours as the world moved from a scheduled world to a release oriented on demand world.

MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS: ITV in talks to sell business to Comcast's Sky. Here's some UK news coverage of discussions between ITV and Comcast-owned Sky for the purchase of the UK free-to-air broadcaster at a valuation of GBP £1.6 billion. The deal comes at a time when competition from global streamers and services such as YouTube are placing significant competitive pressure on local national broadcasters and forcing markets to adjust and consolidate. VodafoneThree Ofcom has told Keir Starmer and Rache Reeves it is pleased with the results of the VodafoneThree merger. In an open letter to Starmer and Reeves, chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes hailed early consumer benefits and the investment resulting Three merger. Dawes said consumers are already seeing benefits. Network integration has delivered faster 4G speeds for around seven million people across the UK, even at this early stage. Coverage has also improved sharply. Dawes said the merger has removed 16,500 square kilometres of mobile “not-spots”, boosting connectivity in areas that previously suffered from weak or non-existent signal. #business#financial#SME

Spoiler alert: Propositions rooted in customer insight survive the test of time. The idea for this prop came from multiple rounds of quant, qual and co-creation sessions with existing subscription TV customers. 7 years ago. We asked what frustrated them the most about their existing subscription TV provider. Their answer: being forced to sign up for content they didn’t need (sport enthusiasts who had to take entertainment content in order to watch sport), and struggling to cancel add-ons they didn't use because they had to call up and negotiate with a sales agent bonused on them keeping the content! The econometrics insight from the research: people don't actually like changing things. But they really like the reassurance that if needed, they can change them. My solution: taking the principles from BT Mobile (as I said, this was a while ago now!) and let customers flex... but make it TV. Add and remove content each month. Let customers do it online, when it suits them, with no need to talk to a real person, unless they want to. Want to watch the summer of cricket but not pay for sport all year? Sure. Grandchildren coming for Christmas and need access to 24/7 movies? No problem. Want to know what all the White Lotus fuss is about? Easy. And when the need for that particular content passes? And this was the REALLY important part… No. Questions. Asked. The formula is incredibly simple. Identify the customer problem / frustration and solve it / make it better. If you make the customer experience simple and intuitive then customers will stick around. If you get this and the pricing right, then you don’t need to worry about churn as you are offering exactly what the customer needs, when they need it, and with a contact strategy that suits them, not the business. The outcomes are mutually beneficial for customer and organisation. I came up with this idea in 2018. We then had some fun and games building it. We finally launched it as Flexible BT TV early 2020 at the height of Covid. In 2025 not only does it live on, but it’s in it's second iteration as Flexible EE TV. Only the best customer products and propositions were built on the brand new tech stack as part of the New EE launch in 2023. I’ve always been really proud that this was one of the few propositions that made the transition from BT to EE. Seeing the post by EE this evening made me smile. So much hard work went into turning an idea into reality, by a lot of people… twice!!!! It's made me feel really proud to see my idea, 7 years after I came up with it, still relevant and at the front of EE’s current campaign activity. P.S. The execution is great Kelly Engstrom and team!

Michael Weening is right(which pains me to say that), but the real mystery isn’t that change happens—it’s our collective amnesia about it. Every decade, a massive disruption hits, and every decade, the incumbents act like they’ve been blindsided by a rogue wave rather than a tide that’s been rising for years. Just look at the graveyard of “unsinkable” business models from the last 50 years: The 1970s Wave (Kodak): They literally invented the digital camera in 1975. But they buried it because they were terrified it would cannibalize film sales. They chose to protect their margins rather than their future. Result? Bankruptcy. The 2000s Wave (Blockbuster): They had the chance to buy Netflix for $50M. They laughed them out of the room because they were addicted to the easy money of late fees—a business model based on punishing your own customers. Result? One nostalgic store left in Oregon. The 2007 Wave (BlackBerry): When the iPhone launched, they dismissed it as a “toy” because it lacked a physical keyboard. They thought business was about email. Apple knew it was about the ecosystem. Result? 0% market share. The 2010s Wave (Taxis): They thought a plastic medallion and government regulation was a moat. Uber proved that a better user experience is the only moat that matters. Which industry or company do you think will be the next history lesson? #AdaptOrDie #Innovation #BusinessHistory #2026 -----

🚨IMPORTANT From Thursday 1st May 2025, Lyca Radio – Greater London and Lyca Gold – Greater London will be switching to DAB+. This upgrade means your favourite radio stations will broadcast in stereo quality for the first time, along with enhanced signal clarity. Please note, this change applies only to London services and does not affect Manchester or Leicestershire. Yet another example of a telecoms operator selling off media assets, this time Telenor selling its stake in Allente (created by the merger of Canal Digital and Viasat) to its JV partner. I wrote about this trend in a recent Analysys Mason article, highlighting the sale of similar assets by other operators (even if TV is still a central component of many fixed broadband plans). I shouldn't really be surprised, but I do find it interesting how so many different operators follow such a similar strategy. https://lnkd.in/eQ3bBf9W

BT Group’s new partnership with Starlink is a clear signal of where the industry is heading...collaboration between terrestrial and satellite networks to achieve true nationwide connectivity. By combining BT’s fibre and mobile infrastructure with Starlink’s low-latency satellite network, the agreement targets the UK’s hardest-to-reach areas — communities where traditional rollout has always been limited (by cost or geography). It’s another reminder that the future of telecoms won’t be defined by a single technology, but by how effectively networks integrate. As full fibre rollout approaches saturation, hybrid models combining fibre, mobile, and satellite are emerging as a practical path to closing the digital divide. There will be an evolving need for talent fluent in both terrestrial and non-terrestrial network integration in the near future. Those with long memories sometimes point to the consolidation of the UK cable industry as a precedent for the altnet sector. As precedents go, it's not the most encouraging one. In 1992 there were 29 companies holding cable franchises in the UK, By 2005 there were just 2: Virgin Media and WightCable (now WightFibre). However, this consolidation took over a decade. Vendors need to be ready to sell at a reasonable price, negotiating and integrating acquisitions takes time, and there were many of them. Altnet consolidation - starting with four times as many players - may take at least as long. Further, this consolidation didn't do much for shareholders. Most transactions were predominantly for shares, not cash, and NTL and Telewest (the last two major groups standing) both went through restructures that essentially wiped out equity owners. And all this despite the fact that the cable industry was based on franchises (local monopolies) of a type overbuilt-altnets might look at with envy. We may be in for a long ride.

Despite market momentum, many still face onboarding cycles of 3-6 months, stalling revenue and pushing potential partners towards faster-moving competitors. Free Wi-Fi in the sky. That Great Business Show with Conall Ó Móráin are proud podcast partners with Aer Lingus long haul. Now you'll be able to stream our 270 episode back catalogue onboard when they introduce free Wi-Fi onboard next year (checks calendar), which is very soon. From London Times Andrew Ellson, Robert Lea British Airways is to woo passengers with the offer of free “high-speed” wifi on most of its planes next year. As it seeks to combat the lure of budget operators, the airline’s owner, International Airlines Group (IAG), has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s STARLINK, which offers satellite internet connections. BA said the service would be as good or better than home connectivity and will be available on all European flights, as well as transatlantic crossings and other global routes. At present BA charges most passengers for wifi access, with prices starting at £4.99, but there have been complaints that the service is slow and unreliable. After striking the deal with Musk, IAG is promising the best and most widespread internet connectivity of any European airline. The deal means customers should in theory be able to stream their own films, TV and music and will no longer have to rely on entertainment offered by the airline. Starlink says it will offer download speeds of between 150 and 450 megabytes per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 20-70MBps. Independent testing of Starlink on aircraft by Ookla, an analyst firm, found average download speeds of 150Mbps and average upload speeds of 24Mbps. The service will be free on BA and its sister airlines Iberia and Aer Lingus but the company said there would be a small charge for wifi on IAG’s budget airlines Iberia Express and Vueling. It is due to be available on more than 500 of IAG’s 600-strong fleet of jets including most of BA’s 300 aircraft. The planes that will not be connected will be those nearest to retirement, and they will be replaced in due course by new Boeing or Airbus craft. BA declined to give a timetable for the service’s introduction but said it would be at some point next year. It was unable to explain how international jurisdiction would work when customers accessed streaming services on board, which have different licensing deals in different countries. BBC iPlayer, for example, is not available outside the UK and it is unclear whether the service will work mid- Atlantic. IAG said speeds of 150MBps mean downloading a high-definition film takes about five minutes. The UK’s average maximum home download speed is 223MBps. 📺 ITV in talks with Sky to sell broadcast arm ITV has entered preliminary discussions with Sky owner, Comcast, over a potential £1.6bn deal to sell its media and entertainment division — including ITV’s linear channels and streaming platform, ITVX. 📺 The deal would not include ITV Studios, producer of Love Island and Mr Bates vs the Post Office. 📊 A sale could give Comcast a 70%+ share of the UK TV ad market, according to analysts, though any deal would face CMA scrutiny. 📉 ITV’s latest trading update shows total ad revenue forecast to fall 9% in Q4, compared to a 5% decline across the wider UK TV market. 📈 ITV Studios continues to perform strongly, on track for 13–15% profit margins. If approved, the deal would mark the biggest shake-up in UK broadcasting since Comcast’s £30bn takeover of Sky in 2018. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYqhKpve

As someone who thrives on in-person interaction, I always enjoy IBC - International Broadcasting Convention. I also love Amsterdam, so I never need an excuse to come 🇳🇱 The key takeaways for me: 1️⃣ The squeeze on linear ad and subscription revenue continues apace, it continues to have a material impact across the industry. 2️⃣ AI fatigue x AI excitement, people want real world use cases that provide value. It’s tough to cut through the noise at a show of this size. 3️⃣ Live sports, no matter the platform, are key. 4️⃣ There are too many suppliers, I see it in the MSP space, but I hear complaints about it in other areas as well, we’re in a consolidating market where global/regional scale is key. 5️⃣ There’s opportunity out there… but you have to hunt it out. 6️⃣ FinOps are providing value to those that have them, especially if they went all-in on cloud early on. 7️⃣ The public cloud space for media clients is a). ripe for disruption and b). not necessarily the ‘must have’ it was previously, in some instances on-prem is back in vogue. 8️⃣ The C-band reduction in the US is real and coming, migration planning needs to start now. 9️⃣ The Encompass Digital Media, Inc. team who attended are exceptional. They’re passionate about the industry, our clients and our business, I’m thankful to work with such a talented bunch of people that are entertaining to hangout with... 1️⃣0️⃣ While M&E is full of lovely people, we’re a collectively aging industry, we need young blood… depressing that one. Until next year… #Encompass #NavigateWhatsNext #IBC #Amsterdam #Cloud #IP #Media #Entertainment #FinOps

Most organisations obsess over their visible pipelines: succession charts, development plans, headcount forecasts. They’re neat, logical, and reassuring. After two decades working in the telecoms industry, I’ve noticed there’s always a second stream running underneath, the shadow pipeline. It’s the informal flow of trust, mentorship, and backchannel collaboration that doesn’t show up on slides but often determines who actually delivers when pressure rises. The colleague who connects teams across silos. The mentor who guides future leaders long before titles shift. The network that moves knowledge faster than process maps. Think of it as the organisation’s circulatory system, invisible, yet vital. Contrary to belief, the shadow pipeline isn’t a threat. It’s a strength, provided leaders recognise it and align it with formal planning. What’s flowing through your shadow pipeline right now, and are you nurturing it, or ignoring it? #SuccessionPlanning #LeadershipDevelopment #ExecutiveInsight #OrganisationalCulture #QuantumCoaching
