Couldn't agree more with Steve's comments. Many people think selling a business is easy, something which having done so all my working life a can say, hand of heart, is simply not true - and there have been some especially quirky ones over the last 40 years. It's very complex and the level of trust and commitment required on behalf of both vendor and advisor is significant. It's not just about pricing (which is tricky enough even when you know a specialist market intimately), but also about guiding potential clients about what sale process to follow - asset+business or company sale? It's not just a simple case of one being more tax efficient than the other, as there are many additional costs and obligations associated with a corporate transaction and also, what type of sale structure will the market prefer/expect for any particular business. Preparation for a sale process is key and collation of information as well as having experienced legal and accounting support is vital. Then there's the hand-holding of clients through agreeing what sales strategy to implement - open market or confidential? - how do they work in practice? what are the pros and cons of either? These are all common, but highly important questions and so having the help of a professional advisor for whom this is the "day job" means real-world guidance can be provided based on years of experience of executing successful sale processes. So as Steve rightly says, choosing the right advisor should very rarely be about cost, it should be about value and more importantly value add.
