Welcome

to the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP)

CEESP, the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, is an inter-disciplinary network of professionals whose mission is to act as a source of advice on the environmental, economic, social and cultural factors that affect natural resources and biological diversity and to provide guidance and support towards effective policies and practices in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

CEESP VISION

"A world where equity is at the root of a dynamic harmony between people and nature, as well as among peoples. A world of diversity, productivity and integrity of natural systems. A world in which production and consumption patterns are sustainable. A world where cultural diversity is intertwined with biological diversity and both generate abundant livelihoods opportunities."

Welcome to the site of the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy-CEESP- fully updated after a new mandate has been approved at the 3d World Conservation Congress in Bangkok (November 2004).

You can now take a tour of CEESP by reviewing its mandate and structure, work plans for the current quadriennium, and recent activities. You may also go in depth into its THEMES AND WORKING GROUPS, through which the CEESP members organize for action (click on any one of the golden buttons on the very top of this home page) or explore the key topics that have emerged as areas of concern that relate to several Themes or Working Groups, as graphically illustrated by the corolla model,

Poverty and Conservation
Landscapes, People and Power

R.J.Fisher et al.

High levels of rural poverty in many of the world's most biodiverse regions makes it an ethical and practical imperative to find more equitable and realistic ways of achieving conservation. Livelihoods of the rural poor and options for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity are so intimately entwined that they are better addressed through an integrated approach irresprective if the primary motivation is one of development or one of conservation.
