Gaza Theater Group Presents American Classic Steinbeck’s “The Pearl”

“Basma” (Smile), a Gazan cultural arts organization, held its first performance of John Steinbeck’s classic story “The Pearl” on May 12 in Gaza. With a $20,000 grant from the Consulate General’s Public Affairs office, Basma translated Steinbeck’s work into classical Arabic and hired actors and a director to stage the play.

    As part of U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem’s April “Environmental Awareness Month,” and in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the American Corner in Gaza (AC Gaza) organized a planting and clean-up campaign at Al-Azhar University.

  • U.S. Budget Support Totals $150 Million in Fiscal Year 2010

    The United States has successfully completed the transfer of $75 million in budget support to the Palestinian Authority (PA), in fulfillment of the U.S. Government’s commitment to provide $150 million in direct budget assistance to the PA in Fiscal Year 2010. The United States had, at the request of the PA, previously delivered $75 million in December 2009.

    The Quartet welcomes the first round of proximity talks between Israelis and Palestinians. These talks are a significant step toward direct, bilateral negotiations and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel and its neighbors.

    Back in 2000, Okolo Rashid had an activist moment — one of many she’s had in her life as a community organizer. Inspired by her Muslim faith, Rashid organized an exhibition in Jackson, Mississippi about Muslim culture in the Iberian Peninsula. More than a year later, Rashid’s exhibition turned into the International Museum of Muslim Cultures, the first museum in the United States dedicated to educating Americans about Muslim culture. Today, she is the museum’s executive director.
