The United States Underscores its Commitment to Maldives at Donor Conference

Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Michael S. Owen represented the United States at the Maldives Donor Conference on March 28-29 and reaffirmed the United States’ continued support in its efforts to address crucial governance, social, environmental and economic challenges. A total assistance package of USD 4.6 million was pledged to Maldives with particular focus on climate change adaptation assistance. Media Note

The United States and Maldives sign an Investment Incentive Agreement

U.S. Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis and Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Rasheed, representing the Governments of the United States and the Maldives, signed an Investment Incentive Agreement on Monday, March 15th in Malé.  The agreement allows U.S. businesses that invest in the Maldives or conduct business with Maldivian companies to be eligible for loan guarantees and other support from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). 

“The Investment Incentive Agreement will help to expand growing commercial ties between the United States and the Maldives.  I am confident that American investment will increase as a result of this agreement,” said Ambassador Butenis at the signing ceremony.  “Our two countries work together closely, and this agreement will help generate employment, build new businesses and diversify the Maldivian economy.  This agreement is a good step forward for the Maldives.” more

American Corner Male’ Hosts a Public Lecture for Library Staff on Emerging Trends in Libraries

Mr. Steve Kerchoff, Information Resource Officer with U.S. Embassy New Delhi presented ‘Emerging Trends in Libraries’ on October 26, 2009 at the American Corner Male’. Approximately 42 librarians from different school libraries and from the National Library attended the lecture.The positive feedback received from the participants established the program as a success.

Mr. Kerchoff gave a broad presentation on Web 2.0, Sister Libraries, International Collaborations within libraries, and social networking tools like Blog, Twitter, Facebook, America.gov platforms, video web chats and explained how to participate in them as many of the technologies are not popularly known or used.

The program also promoted the American Corner lecture series and the resources available to library professionals for reference.
