The year is 4001 A.D. – led by the artificial intelligence called “Father,” the island nation of Japan has expanded out of the Pacific and into geosynchronous orbit with the ravaged Earth below. With billions to feed and protect, it has fallen to one solitary guardian to enforce the law of Father’s empire – the mysterious folk hero known as Rai. They say he can appear out of nowhere. They say he is a spirit…the ghost of Japan. But when the first murder in a thousand years threatens to topple Father’s benevolent reign, Rai will be forced to confront the true face of a nation transformed…and his own long-lost humanity…

In the 90s, Valiant started their quality-centered publishing by reintroducing a futuristic series from the 60s. While that series in itself was great, Valiant quickly managed to build a new world around it and published several series set in the world of the 41st century. One of these series was Rai. Unfortunately the original Rai soon gave way for a more action-oriented version.

Now Valiant is back and after establishing their series that take place nowadays, they have continued to the future. Rai builds on the old series, but much is redone, hopefully allowing it to have a bigger success than the original series.

While I always have preferred good stories, it does help with great art and this series has amazing art. It should be checked out just to enjoy the beauty of the futuristic scenarios persented, and while doing so, take the time to get into the story that is captivating and multilayered.more
What a GREAT re-interpretation of the 1990s Valiant character. The art in this is STUNNING to say the least. Is Rai human? Is Rai a machine? We'll have to keep reading the series to see. A page turner if there ever was one.more
