Today’s People Spotlight features Mario Turgeon, mechanical engineer, based in Montreal, Quebec. He specializes in hydraulic turbines and generators. With over 32 years of experience, he has contributed to a range of hydropower projects. This includes new developments and rehabilitations, multiple turbine types and configurations, from small to large‑scale hydroelectric and pumped‑storage facilities in Canada, the United States, South America and Africa. He became interested in the hydropower industry after a summer job where he was a tour guide at a large hydropower generation station in Quebec. This experience helped him understand how the turbine-generator units convert the potential energy of water into electricity while also giving him a lasting interest and insight into the history of the hydropower industry. Since then he has developed broad experience in hydropower. One of Mario’s notable projects is the Jiji–Mulembwe Hydropower Project in Burundi. The two run‑of‑river hydropower plants increased Burundi’s national electricity capacity by approximately 25%, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels for power generation. Mario found it rewarding to participate in a project that directly supports Burundi’s energy security and long‑term development. Mario says “Throughout my career, I’ve learned that listening to others, sharing credit, and supporting colleagues leads to better outcomes, not only for the project but for everyone involved.” Read more from Mario, his career progression and notable projects in his People Spotlight blog post: https://lnkd.in/d_3zexCj
