Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. It depends on the liberties delivered by open source licenses. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is the authority that defines Open Source, recognized globally by individuals, companies, and by public institutions. One of our most important activities is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open-source cooperation.

✨ Day 1 at #OCX26 brought the open source community together in full force. Mike Milinkovich set the stage at his keynote, and Ruth Buscombe broke down how decisions are made under pressure in Formula 1. We had full rooms across all the tracks, and workshops, and the networking area was packed! Lots of interesting discussions, people reconnecting, meeting for the first time, and sharing what they’re working on. **How much does your community do about governance? Share your cases with the broader FOSS community!** We’re organizing the *Governance Track* at FOSSY 2026 and we want to hear from people doing the work. If you’re involved in open source governance from a community or industry perspective, this is your space. We are looking for talks that go beyond theory: * How your project defines roles and responsibilities * Decision-making processes and conflicts * Sustainability, funding, and leadership transitions * Policies in practice (including Policy-as-Code) * What worked, what failed, and what you would do differently This track focuses on bringing together maintainers, foundation members, industry practitioners working with OSS, community leaders, and academics. 👉 Submit your proposal: https://lnkd.in/gFTRknqq 👉 Track details: https://lnkd.in/gPx4Wnsb If you’re unsure whether your idea fits, reach out. Let’s bring practical, honest conversations about governance to the forefront of FOSS.

Open Community Experience has opened with a keynote from Mike Milinkovich and a clear message: “OCX is our opportunity to connect. This week is a celebration of our projects and the people who make these projects real.” From OpenHW Foundation to the rapid growth of the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle, the keynote has highlighted where the Eclipse Foundation is heading and where open source is gaining momentum. Some key moments: 🔹 Open Regulatory Compliance (ORC), focused on the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), and on building up an open source community response to the new regulations. “And for anyone looking for answers, check out the #FAQ”. 🔹 Open VSX Managed Registry launch. “This is a big moment for open source.” With AWS, Google, and Cursor on board, this pushes forward a sustainable model for open tooling ecosystems. “We’re the leaders in figuring out a sustainable business model to support these registries.” 🔹 Theia & AI. Modern developer tooling, now evolving into AI-powered environments. Stay tuned for more takeaways from #OCX26! #OCX26 #opensource #EclipseFdn

Today, we are sharing our newest report, "Licensing Best Practices for Sharing Scientific Data", which extends the open data practices originally designed for climate data in our 2023 report "Recommended Best Practices for the Better Sharing of Climate Data" to other disciplines. By encouraging adoption alongside those already maximizing open access to publicly funded data, our recommendations provide a baseline for globally interoperable and practical licensing and attribution practices. They make open data easier to access, share, and reuse with clear guidance and actionable steps. Consistent licensing reduces legal uncertainty, improves interoperability, and enables faster discovery and collaboration. Adopting these practices strengthens trust, transparency, and global scientific cooperation.
