By identifying a major vulnerability in United Airlines’s systems, Alex didn't just earn a record-breaking 2.6 million miles—he helped harden a perimeter that protects millions of travelers. As he puts it: "Hacking a company and telling them how to fix it is a great way to protect the users." In an era where AI is "spewing bugs into cyberspace," we need more students like Alex and his co-founder, Ahmed Allam, who are building tools (like their startup, Strix) to catch vulnerabilities at the speed of code. This week I collaborated with our librarian to host our first Socratic Seminar with my students. Many students were not comfortable speaking and asking questions, and trying to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone was difficult. But it's necessary. We can't learn or grow when we stay inside the comfort zone. We have to step out to meet challenges, into the learning zone. So with the help of our librarian, we got students engaged, we got people talking and asking questions. Don't let your students, or yourself, stay sitting in that comfort zone! Help them step out and feel like they can overcome the challenge!
