Release: New HTML5 Embedded Reader
Today, we are announcing the roll-out of HTML5 code for all websites that currently display Scribd content in Flash. The new embedded reader will still allow you to read the content, navigate to the content on Scribd and print it. Now, you will also be able to share the content on Scribd, Facebook and Twitter directly from the embed. Unlike Flash, HTML5 is supported by most mobile devices, such as iPhones, iPads and Android smartphones. This means that you will be able to read more Scribd embeds through your mobile devices!
Starting today, all new content that is uploaded to Scribd and then embedded on a third-party website, will display in HTML5. In addition, all previously embedded content using the Flash-based reader will convert to HTML5 in the coming weeks.
Read on!

The love felt through Eat Say Love… together!
February was the month of love on Scribd and we celebrated with the Eat Say Love campaign.
One aspect of this campaign that was especially close to my heart was the Eat Say Love… together! collection, which was made up of content from the Scribd Community. 74 pieces of content make up this moderated collection! And the range of styles and topics of the submitted content was impressive. There were wonderful short stories, photos, tear-jerkers, funny stories, poetry, relationship advice, and more!
We promised to send Scribd t-shirts to the authors of our favorite three submissions. The Scribd Staff had quiet a good time reading everything in the collection and narrowing down our favorites was a challenge. But we have made our picks.
Please congratulate Jeanne Veillette Bowerman (author of “Love the Invisible”), Claire Hennessy (author of “Valentine Surprise”) and Hyla Molander (author of “Love in Pieces: Memoir Excerpt”) on their new Scribd t-shirts, in which they will, no doubt, look fabulous!
I want to send out a big “thank you” to all the Scribblers who submitted their content to the Eat Say Love… together! collection. All of us at Scribd love having you as part of our community and look forward to reading more from all of you.

Celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day
In 1908, 5000 women in New York marched in New York, demanding shorter work hours and higher pay. In 1911, the first official International Women’s Day was celebrated, and in 2011, 100 years later, International Women’s Day is a celebration of women all around the world.
Across the globe, events are being organized advocating the strength and importance of women. And you can find those events right here on Scribd! In London, the CoolTan Arts Independent Gallery is celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day. In Kolkata, India, there is a meeting for transgender women. And all across the US, you will find performances of the Vagina Monologues. Still can’t find an event close to you? Plan one yourself!
Onward! To 100+ more years of International Women’s Day.

It’s Mardi Gras!
March 8th is Mardi Gras! Whether you’re going to make it to New Orleans this year or not, you’ll be able to get a flavor of the celebrations here on Scribd. If you’re throwing your own Mardi Gras party, make sure that the Sazerac cocktails (the official cocktail of New Orleans) are ready. But the most important part about a Mardi Gras party is the food. Maybe it’s time to practice some new cooking skills and try putting together some amazing Cajun cuisine!
Mardi Gras celebrations have been around for ages. Although we can’t travel through time, story telling will get us as close to the past as we can get. So what was Mardi Gras of the past like in 1903?
Whether you’re heading to mass or Bourbon Street, have a safe and happy Mardi Gras!

“The Office” Head Writer, Danny Chun, Reads For A Cause
“Reading is the cheapest, most edifying, and best form of entertainment. Aside from The Office.”
You know you should be looking for a new job if “The Office” resonates with you. But Danny Chun, the Head Writer of the hit TV series, lives it every day. He received two Writers Guild Award nominations for his work: one for “The Simpsons” where he served as a writer and co-Executive Producer, and most recently for “The Office”. Oh, and he’s this month’s Read For A Cause curator on Scribd!
Check out his Read For A Cause collection here. And make sure to follow him in order to get his updates and readcasts in your reading feed!
“I support Read For A Cause because I am worried that society is getting stupider, and reading makes people un-stupid (smart).” – Danny Chun

The 2011 Academy Awards
This Sunday is the biggest night in Hollywood. It’s time for the 83rd Academy Awards!
While the Hollywood stars walk down the red carpet, the world’s eyes will be glued to their TVs. Whether you are watching out for the fashion, winners or hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, there will be something for everyone at this years Oscars.
It’s been a great year for movies. Even if you missed them, you can prepare for the Oscars by reading reviews. You never know, one of them might inspire you to go and see the movie! Read the reviews for best Animated Feature Film nominees “Toy Story 3” and “How to Train Your Dragon”.
Many films this year have been based on true events. Read the famous speech by King George VI that inspired “The King’s Speech” and the book that inspired “The Social Network.” And who can forget the film that this years host is nominated for Best Actor for, “127 Hours”?
And, of course, everyone is making their predictions. Craig Forgrave picks “The King’s Speech” for Best Picture but The State Newspaper thinks that “True Grit” should win. Make your very own predictions with the Oscars Nomination Ballot!
No matter what you will be watching the Oscars for, one thing is for sure: it will be an exciting evening.

Worldwide weekend of sports
This weekend will be a big sporting weekend all around the world. In the US, eyes will be on the racetrack as rally cars feel the need for speed at the Daytona 500. Much of the rest of the world’s eyes with be on the pitch, watching their countries batting it out in the Cricket World Cup.
Tomorrow, #2 ranked India will face #8 ranked host country Bangladesh in the opening match of the 2011 Cricket World Cup. The following day New Zealand will face Kenya and Sri Lanka will go up against Canada. Defending champion, England, will play the Netherlands on Tuesday. The rules of Cricket are extensive and so it’s ok if you need to brush up on them. Go ahead and check out some Cricket facts or information on batting. It’s all in our ICC Cricket World Cup, 2011 collection. After all, it’s good to stay on top of the second most played sport in the world!
Unlike most other former British colonies, the eyes of the US won’t be on Cricket. Rather, they will be on a different kind of round sporting field. Drivers like Kurt Busch and Jeff Burton will duel it out while Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will try to come from behind in “The Great American Race”, the Daytona 500, this Sunday! Our Daytona 500 collection has your trip to the racetrack covered with the 2011 Insiders Guide and the seating chart. And if you don’t know what those cars are doing, going around and around, check out “NASCAR for Dummies”!
No matter where in the world you are this weekend, there will be a sporting event for you!

Happy Valentine’s Day from Scribd
Love is in the air. It’s Valentine’s Day! And Scribd has lots of love to give.
If you haven’t yet checked out our Eat Say Love campaign, now’s the time to do it! Love, in all its shapes and forms is the topic of conversation, whether it’s romantic, playful, thoughtful, or just plain naughty. And, of course, we have something for families and kids too! No matter whom you love, you will find something to warm your heart.
The power and feeling of love is something that survives the ages. The National Archives reminds us of this with their collection, “Romance Through History”. Stories of love and romance burst from the pages of the Simon & Schuster collection “Happy Valentine’s Day from Simon and Schuster”. And love-related books ranging from steamy romances to true love stories fill the “Books to Fall in Love With” collection from Random House.
At Scribd, we love our community, who in turn, has shown us how much love they have to give to the world. Read the many many wonderful pieces in the “Eat Say Love… together” collection. Read stories about lost love, five-minute romances, naughty surprises, families, and random acts of love.
So spread the love! And from all of us at Scribd, we wish you a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Eyes on Egypt
Today, the eyes of the world are on Egypt. The announcement that Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, was stepping down was received with cheers in Tahrir Square and across the country. The world turned to their televisions, radios, computer monitors and social media outlets to watch and voice their support and congratulations to the people of Egypt.
On Scribd, stories, reports and opinion pieces have been pouring in for weeks, creating a great moderated collection, “Unrest in Egypt”. Pieces such as “Work on Him Until He Confesses” by the Human Rights Watch, discuss the condoned use of torture by the Egyptian police, under Mubarak. Read the statement made by US President Obama on February 10 about the happenings in Egypt, or the press release regarding a memo sent to the now former Egyptian Prime Minister, Ahmed Nazif, from the Egyptian Human Rights Organization about 10 days before his cabinet was dismissed by Mubarak, at the end of January 2011. And for those who want a refresher on the events in Egypt this year, take a look at “The ‘modern pharaoh’”. As you continue to watch the events in Cairo, continue to submit your opinions to Unrest in Egypt!
Although the current attention on Egypt is only a few weeks old, the country has been an interesting one for a very long time. Check out the “Egypt: the politics, the history, the people” collection for a look at the politics, history and stories of the Egyptian people.
